Navy Reserve Center Buffalo

Navy Reserve Center Buffalo This is the official social media page for Navy Reserve Center Buffalo, NY. In 1947, Naval Surface Reserve Division 3-67 (L) was commissioned in Buffalo.

The history of the Naval Reserve in Buffalo starts with the New York Naval Militia (NYNM). Established in 1 889, the Buffalo chapter of the NYNM originally drilled at the Connecticut Street Armory. The State eventually built a training facility ('boathouse') at the foot of Porter Avenue in 1932. At the time, a few Naval Reserve units were drilling with the Naval Militia at the Connecticut Street A

rmory (in the winter months) and at the NYNM boathouse (in the summer). In 1949, the Naval Reserve constructed its own training facility (Reserve Center) at the foot of Porter Avenue, leaving the boathouse exclusively with the Naval Militia. In 1978, the Naval Reserve constructed the current Reserve Center building which was dedicated in 1979 providing 43,000 square feet of training space for Naval Reservists. In 1997, the Navy further expanded the center adding a 23,000 square foot addition to the Reserve Center, which added more classrooms, a Medical Skills Laboratory and the first-ever Lecture Hall for Naval Reserve Forces. This expansion also added the 3-bay, 6,000 square foot Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF). In 2007 the Navy and Marine Corps Reserve Center was renamed Navy Operational Support Center, Buffalo, New York. The Buffalo Naval Reserve has operated and maintained numerous training vessels down through the years, including the minesweeper PROWESS from 1965-1970 and LCU 1473 from 1977-1985. In 1987 the Reserve Center took delivery of a custom built, $4.6 million landing craft (LCU 1680), which operated on every lake and adjoining waterway in the Great Lakes system. In 2009 the Navy Reserves returned the LCU to the Fleet and then added a Maritime Pre-positioning Force Utility Boat (MPFUB). In 2021 The Navy Operational Support Center Buffalo, New York was renamed Navy Reserve Center, Buffalo, New York.

Spring has sprung, but back in snowy February, we welcomed the Commander of the Buffalo Police Department’s K-9 Unit and locked-on professional (and very good boy) Paddy to the NRC to execute Random Anti-terrorism Measures (RAMs). RAMs are an important element of effective Anti-Terrorism / Force Protection (ATFP) programs, making it more difficult for would-be terrorists or criminals to confidently plan actions that would harm DoD/DoN personnel and installations.

NRC Buffalo is thankful to the BPD for their partnership in many aspects of protecting our Sailors and facilities.

December’s drill weekend was a festive one as we welcomed NRC Buffalo sailors’ families to our holiday pot luck. Great food was eaten, cookies were decorated, and some fantastic prizes were raffled off. With all the work that goes into each drill weekend, this one was a great chance to build NRC Buffalo camaraderie and pride!

From the NRC Buffalo family, we wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season!
