Attorney General warning parents of deceptive ma*****na edible packaging of snacks

“These unregulated and deceptive cannabis products will only confuse and harm New Yorkers, which is why they have no place in our state,” James said. “It is essential that we limit their access to protect our communities and, more specifically, our children. In light of an increase in accidental overdoses among children nationwide, it is more vital than ever that we do everything we can to curb this crisis and prevent any further harm, or even worse, death. My office is committed to preventing the sale of these products and protecting the wellbeing of all New Yorkers. I urge everyone to remain vigilant against these products and to report these harmful items to my office immediately.”

New York Attorney General Letitia James

There is so much more to behaviour than most people think. Children don’t try to upset us, there is usually something behind it. They are communicating their need through behaviour. If we look behind the behaviour we can see a child who is doing the best they can

2 The Outdoors: Cigarette butts plague the environment

Worldwide smoking causes over seven million deaths a year. But ci******es do damage to the environment as well.

"4.5 trillion cigarette butts are purchased, ci******es are purchased a year, and two-thirds of those end up on the ground." Explains Jenna Brinkworth, Roswell Park Cancer Center Communication Engagement Manager.

Discarded butts are the number one litter item in the world.

The duchess said: “Addiction is not a choice. No-one chooses to become an addict. But it can happen to any one of us. None of us are immune. Yet it’s all too rarely discussed as a serious mental health condition. And seldom do we take the time to uncover and fully understand its fundamental root causes."

The duchess spoke to TV duo Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly about McPartlin’s former addiction problems.

The Hidden U.S. COVID-19 Pandemic: Orphaned Children – More than 140,000 U.S. children lost a primary or secondary caregiver due to the COVID-19 pandemic | National Institute on Drug Abuse

“Children facing orphanhood as a result of COVID is a hidden, global pandemic that has sadly not spared the United States,” said Susan Hillis, CDC researcher and lead author of the study. “All of us – especially our children – will feel the serious immediate and long-term impact of this problem for generations to come. Addressing the loss that these children have experienced – and continue to experience – must be one of our top priorities, and it must be woven into all aspects of our emergency response, both now and in the post-pandemic future.”

Ma*****na use at historic high among college-aged adults in 2020 | National Institute on Drug Abuse

“The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically changed the way that young people interact with one another and offers us an opportunity to examine whether drug taking behavior has shifted through these changes,” said NIDA Director Nora D. Volkow, M.D. “Moving forward, it will be critical to investigate how and when different substances are used among this young population, and the impact of these shifts over time.”

Story from Henry Ford Health System: Substance abuse and seniors: How addiction impacts older adults differently

"Addiction in people over the age of 60 is skyrocketing. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, a growing number of older Americans were misusing alcohol and prescription drugs. Add social isolation to the mix, and fears about contracting a deadly virus, and substance use among seniors is at an all-time high."

Substance use disorder among senior citizens is often overlooked. Medical or behavioral conditions such as depression or dementia can mask signs of addiction.

June 30 Schiller Park Senior Center Event
Prevention begins and ends with parenting. Children of parents who engaged in parenting behaviors and practices generally recognized as supporting their healthy development rarely hurt themselves and others. The Centers for Disease Control, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and the National Institute of Mental Health should be working furiously to find ways to improve the overall quality of parenting in the U.S. Perhaps parenting education campaigns akin to the smoking and seatbelts campaigns of the past. Visit www.advancingparenting.org. In our own unique way we have adopted this approach to primary prevention. Please share. 🙂
