#DEATakeBack National Prescription Drug Take Back Campaign (April 30, 2022) 6 sec CC

According to the CDC, each year over one million emergency room visits occur due to adverse drug effects from medication used outside of what was prescribed by a physician. Often times this can happen when we aren’t vigilant with the storage and disposal of our prescriptions. When prescribed by a physician and taken as directed, medications are safe and can improve a patient’s health and quality of life.

As consumers, it is our responsibility to dispose of unused and expired medications. Doing so prevents accidental harm and limits accessibility for those outside of intended use. Help prevent substance misuse before it starts by practicing safe use, safe storage, and safe disposal.

If you have any medications that need disposing, please consider participating in the DEA National Drug Take Back Day on April 30th. For more information and drop-off locations, please visit the link below.

DANGERS OF MIXING ALCOHOL AND CAFFEINE
Caffeine can mask the depressant effects of alcohol, making drinkers feel more alert than they would otherwise. So they drink more and become more impaired than they realize. Drinkers aged 15 to 23 who mix alcohol with energy drinks (most energy drinks contain caffeine) are 4 times more likely to binge drink at high intensity than drinkers who do not mix alcohol with energy drinks. https://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/fact-sheets/caffeine-and-alcohol.htm

DEA Warns of Increase in Mass-Overdose Events Involving Deadly Fentanyl

“Fentanyl is killing Americans at an unprecedented rate,” said DEA Administrator Anne Milgram. “Already this year, numerous mass-overdose events have resulted in dozens of overdoses and deaths. Drug traffickers are driving addiction, and increasing their profits, by mixing fentanyl with other illicit drugs. Tragically, many overdose victims have no idea they are ingesting deadly fentanyl, until it’s too late.”

A cocktail of alcohol and caffeine can put your heart under attack

When you mix a stimulant with a depressant, the stimulant can mask the depressant’s effects. In other words, combining caffeine and alcohol may mask some of the alcohol’s depressant effects. You might feel more alert and energetic than you normally would while drinking.

But mixing caffeine and alcohol raises your blood pressure, which further increases your risk for:

❤Heart attack
❤Heart disease

CONGRATULATIONS Sally Yageric from The Prevention Council of Erie County 2021 Friend of Prevention! "Sally has partnered with WNY United for many years to bring information and implement strategies to help young people in WNY communities avoid the problems that come from misusing alcohol and other drugs. She is currently working with several coalitions to help them better inform local governments about the impact the recent legalization of ma*****na will have on our youth and community resources. Over 20 years ago Sally and Karen Smith from WNY United created the Parent Forums to be hosted by our local schools to inform parents about how using alcohol, to***co, ma*****na and other substances will affect their children, impact their futures and put families at risk. In addition, she has been supportive of more than one coalition in their application for Drug-Free Communities funding. Sally is more than deserving of this award. She has been in the Prevention Field for as long as I can remember. Her wealth of knowledge, her hard work ethic and her ability to talk to anyone and educate them at the same time are traits that can't go unnoticed. Thank you Sally!" - Sue Boyle #friendsofprevention #thanksforallyoudo #preventionworks

Prevention begins and ends with parenting. Children of parents who engaged in parenting behaviors and practices generally recognized as supporting their healthy development rarely hurt themselves and others. The Centers for Disease Control, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and the National Institute of Mental Health should be working furiously to find ways to improve the overall quality of parenting in the U.S. Perhaps parenting education campaigns akin to the smoking and seatbelts campaigns of the past. Visit www.advancingparenting.org. In our own unique way we have adopted this approach to primary prevention. Please share. 🙂
