Happy World Environment Day! 🌳🌎 It's a great day to explore the world around you today... but did you ever wonder what the world was like 250 years ago?

On Wednesday, June 17, we're taking you on a trip through history to explore the world of naturalism through the lens of one of the most incredible minds you may not have heard of! George Forster's ideas on freedom, equality and how humans interact with nature inspired some of the most important thinkers and revolutionaries of his generation, and his ideas still ring true today.

New York Times Best-Selling author Andrea Wulf will give a special talk at the Museum on her book about his life and achievements, and you can be a part of the discussion!

Tickets are still available: https://www.sciencebuff.org/event/science-buff-lecture-andrea-wulf/

If you stayed up to catch the aurora last night and didn't see anything, don't be too disappointed! There's still a chance you could see it tonight. Our research associate, Tim Collins, is chatting with 7 News WKBW right now about the space weather forecasting process and you can ask him your questions directly!

🚨AURORA ALERT!🚨

We have a great reason to watch the skies tonight and tomorrow, WNY! The NOAA NWS Space Weather Prediction Center is predicting strong aurora activity for us tonight, similar to what we saw in October 2024! According to the US National Weather Service Buffalo NY , weather is looking cooperative to catch a glimpse tonight, too.

How to watch:
✨Go outside between midnight and 4 a.m. (ideally, away from major light sources)
📱Take photos of the sky with your phone using night mode (the aurora will show up better on your phone's camera than you'll be able to see with the naked eye)
📸If you're lucky enough to capture pictures or video tonight, send them our way!

🎥Our research associate, Tim Collins, sent us this incredible video of the October 2024 aurora at Tillman Nature Preserve in Clarence.

Auroras like this happen when the sun ejects magnetic particles called plasma and they are caught in Earth's magnetosphere, causing magnificent lights to streak across the sky.

From the Vault:

We’re dusting off some of the oldest bones in our collection with this photo… 🦕This is what our Hall of Geology and Paleontology looked like back in 1940! If you’re familiar with the Museum today, this space is now the In Motion Science Studio, while our dinos live on in our Rethink Extinct exhibit.

📸 This photo that was digitized as part of a project funded under an Access and Innovation Grant—a member grant awarded by Western New York Library Resources Council - WNYLRC . You can view this and over 1,200 glimpses of the Museum’s history just like it here: https://nyheritage.org/collections/hidden-views-salvaging-historic-images-buffalo-society-natural-sciences

Want to see these spaces or yourself and get in on some hands-on prehistoric fun? Stop by this Saturday at 2 p.m. for our Dinosaur Deep Dive family workshop, where you and your kids can learn about fossils and make your own fossil craft to take home!

Happy first day of (meteorological) summer, WNY! ☀️☀️☀️

Meteorologists break the seasons up equally throughout the year to track weather and climate patterns more accurately year to year, since the solstices and equinoxes fall on different days and times each year. Here's what the meteorological calendar looks like:

🌷Spring: March 1
☀️Summer: June 1
🍂Fall: September 1
❄️Winter: December 1

Astronomical summer (summer solstice) starts on June 21 at 4:24 a.m.

Check out this newly digitized photo of the Museum from over 90 years ago! 😲

📸The original photo was snapped in 1934 at the Museum as crews unloaded exhibit materials the Museum acquired from the Century of Progress Exhibition after it closed in Chicago. We’re excited to announce that it is one of 1,200 images in our historical negative collection that have now been digitized thanks to funding under an Access and Innovation Grant—a member grant awarded to the Museum by the Western New York Library Resources Council - WNYLRC.

We’ll be adding more of these sneak peeks into our history on the New York Heritage Digital Collection’s website throughout the year: https://nyheritage.org/collections/hidden-views-salvaging-historic-images-buffalo-society-natural-sciences

Did you hear a loud boom around 5:00 this morning? Maybe you saw a bright flash in the sky? That was a meteor whizzing across the skies of WNY!

If you were lucky enough to catch it on camera, we'd love to see it! Message us your videos and we'll share them on our pages (with credit) 🎥
