Today we recognize the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
"The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that current media doesn’t perform. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for our people in the face of national indifference and hatred. Day of Remembrance reminds non-transgender people that we are their sons, daughters, parents, friends and lovers. Day of Remembrance gives our allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those of us who’ve died by anti-transgender violence." -TDOR.info

TDOR 2020 honors those who died between October 1, 2019 and September 30, 2020. For that period, 47 lives were taken in the United States (that we know of), and 386 worldwide; this includes death by violence, by self-harm, those who died in ways yet to be determined and sadly, this year, from COVID-19.

Each year we have the honor of recognizing courageous and visionary leaders at our annual conference. Unfortunately, we had to cancel our 2020 conference due to the pandemic, but that means everyone can now join us on December 17th for our 2020 Award Ceremony. The virtual event is free, and guaranteed to be inspiring and engaging. During this event, we will recognize:

Dr. Jackson Katz who has led the way for other men – and women – working to promote gender equality and prevent gender-based violence.

Lt Andrea Munford, for her victim-centered, trauma-informed approach to investigating Larry Nassar that ensured survivors were treated with the utmost compassion, sensitivity and respect.

Ashley Fantz, for her outstanding investigative journalism with CNN Investigates, which resulted in the groundbreaking series Destroyed.

Susannah Grant and Sarah Timberman for their vision and to create Unbelievable, the Netflix series that tells a tale of unspeakable trauma, unwavering tenacity, and astounding resilience.

Make a plan to re-energize your spirit. RSVP today to receive a link to the livestream. https://evawintl.org/join-us-in-celebrating-our-2020-award-recipients/

Taken from one of our followers. Thanks Olivia!

Today is Wednesday - which means I’m wearing PURPLE to show my support for survivors of Domestic Violence.

Between 21 and 60% of victims of intimate partner violence lose their jobs due to reasons stemming for their abuse. (ncadv.org)

27% of domestic homicide victims are children. (miamidade.gov)

Every 73 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. Every 9 minutes, that victim is a child.(RAINN.org)

Meanwhile, only about 5 out of every 1,000 rapists will end up in prison.

Domestic Violence is carried out in a number of ways and isn’t always towards just one person in the home. Join me in wearing purple this month and I’m standing in solidarity for those impacted by domestic violence every day.

Title IX Needs Your Help — Write a Letter to the Editor – AAUW : Empowering Women Since 1881

Title IX turns 48 today! We need your help protecting Title IX so that it can continue to do what it was created for - protect students. Here’s one step you can take right now:

In May, the Department of Education issued a long-anticipated but extremely harmful rule designed to substantially weaken Title IX, rolling back important protections for student survivors of sexual harassment and assault. Now we need your help to stop this rule from ever going into effect.
