Another Voice: BISON Fund empowers children in low-income families

On Thursday, an op-ed titled, “BISON Fund empowers children in low-income families,” by BISON cofounder Tom Beecher was published in The Buffalo News. The piece reflects on the past school year and the lack of school choice for low-income families in our community. For 27 years the BISON Fund has been providing school choice options for these families. "If ever evidence was needed to justify an organization like BISON, the pandemic - and its resulting demands on families - provided it."

Providing these children with better educational opportunities while absorbing values would go a long way toward addressing disparities.

After moving her family from Rwanda to the U.S., Cynthia’s mother never stopped instilling in her a passion for learning. With help from the BISON Scholarship Fund, Cynthia and her four siblings attended Our Lady of Black Rock. Cynthia went on to graduate from Hobart and William Smith Colleges with a degree in public policy and biology.

After joining the Peace Corps for two years, Cynthia accepted a position at an international development firm, where she still works today. Learn more about the students BISON has empowered to pursue their dreams: https://bisonfund.com/success-stories/

ORPHANS AND NEEDY CHILDREN PROFILE IN KARENE DISTRICT, SIERRA LEONE In our project area number of Orphan and vulnerable Children are found at total of (95) children in five communities. The very low level of education among the whole population of the community which has been attributed to the increasing number of orphans as a result of the prevalence of abject poverty that has hit the communities for many years. Subsistence agriculture being the major way of livelihood has made it very difficult for the parents to send their children to school due to the increasing cost of education. The most affected and vulnerable category here is the orphans with no proper care and protection, no education, no food, no clothes, no medical care and home to host them. Worst, some of the children at years low as 14 are heading families taking responsibility of catering for the young ones as well as finding away for their education. In an attempt to do so, they end up meeting with young men and women to earn survival with money less than $1, coupled with HIV and AIDS. This has encouraged and increased on the rate of infections among the young population in the targeted communities. The project is therefore initiated to target the orphans and the vulnerable children and to empower them by providing education and also empowering their guardians to carry out income generating activities that would further keep them.
