It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Sister Mary Celeste O'Bryan on December 30th, 2022. Sister Celeste was truly an amazing person. After a career in teaching in local Catholic schools, Sister became a founding member of the then-South Buffalo Community Table in 1983 when she was 50 years old. She took on the operation and management of the Table, shepherding the all-volunteer staff to serve those in need of a hot meal and more.

Sister Celeste used to say, "Our job is not just to feed: These people need someone to listen to them." As a Sister of Mercy, she had taken a vow of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and dedicated her life to the service of the poor, sick, and uneducated. Sister went above and beyond in fulfilling these vows for the next 32 years until her retirement in 2016.

In 2017, the Table was renamed "The Sister Mary Celeste O'Bryan South Buffalo Community Table" in her honor. Today, the Table's mission remains much the same as it was in 1983; and now, the need is greater than ever.

Sister's life has been and will continue to be an inspiration to the volunteers who share their time and talents at the Table, as well as to all who donate to continue her good work.

Even with her passing, she's still teaching us—the lesson of feeding those in need and supporting those who suffer from poverty and misfortune. And in continuing the mission of the Table, her spirit lives on.

... As we close out 2021 and look forward to the New Year, we at the SBCT want to thank this very generous community.

The SBCT has been serving hot meals since 1983. The mission of the Table started with Sr. Celeste O'Bryan and her impact in this Community continues. Sister Celeste established the Table guidelines....serve with dignity and no questions asked. When her cupboards started to look bare, she prayed. Sister's prayers were always answered. And yes, our prayers continue and are always answered.

The volunteers have committed to serving hot meals during the pandemic and being essential we were able to stay open only due to their commitment. This of course depended on the availability of food items.

During the course of the year, so many have reached out to meet our needs with food items and monetary donations which have sustained us during these challenging times.

We have businesses in our Community that reach out to request our 'wish list', donate ‘about to expire’ breads and baked goods, offer to provide a fully prepared meal once a month, and ask how many turkeys are needed for Thanksgiving dinner. Farmers share their crops so that our guests are served fresh produce.

Our Community comes together in neighborhoods and among families. During the holidays, streets have celebrated the season by collecting requested items to donate and strolling Santas family traditions have turned into annual fund raising for the Community Table.

Gifts cards are donated by our parishes, other not for profits and local community based organizations.

Talented musicians come together several times during the year to entertain and pass the hat for "Sr. Celeste's soup kitchen".

Our South District Councilmember and his energized staff are in constant contact and offering assistance to ensure our ability continues serving hot meals in our community.

This effort takes a village which we so appreciate and acknowledge. If you would like to join our volunteer base, please reach out for information and an on site visit.

Finally, please share our mission and location with your family and friends. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic we are still operating on a 'take out' basis Monday through Thursday from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. These meals are home cooked, delicious, plentiful and always different that including soup, main meal and dessert.

With much sincerity THANK YOU!

The Table is closed today for the safety of our guests and volunteers.

Welcome Mary Beth as new Manager of the Table!

From Mary Beth:
Hi, I am Mary Beth. I am thrilled to announce that I have been appointed as the new Manager at the South Buffalo Community Table. I was born and raised in South Buffalo, attended Holy Family School and was a member of the parish for over 25 years. I graduated from Mount Mercy Academy and after attending college, started employment with the Buffalo Sewer Authority where I retired after 35 years of service. I have been married for 28 years and we have 2 beautiful daughters. Walking with my dogs is a favorite hobby of mine!!

I’m so excited to be back in South Buffalo and grateful for the chance to give back to the community I grew up in. I look forward to working with the volunteers that provide meals to our daily guests and bring comfort to those in need. When you are in the area, please stop in and say hello!

Several of our very talented students performed at the Loaded Lumber Buffalo Holiday Market on Saturday evening. Check out this mini-montage of the show! A bit of set - up chaos caused Mrs. Lawless to completely FORGET to set up our tip jar to benefit the South Buffalo Community Table. If you have some spare change to donate this holiday season, this organization that feeds community members in need year round could certainly benefit from your contribution!
