Riverside Park Buffalo

Riverside Park Buffalo Page dedicated to events and activities in Buffalo's very own Riverside Park.

: Designed in 1898, the 22-acre Riverside Park was the last park the Olmsted firm designed in Buffalo. To avoid problems relating to stagnant water, the restoration of the original minnow pools was reinterpreted to form the River Rock Garden, with several of Olmsted's features incorporated into the design.

: Built in 1887, this bridge was originally called the Dell Bridge and spanned the space between the Beech Banks picnic grounds bordering the present Shakespeare Hill and the Childrenโ€™s Green playground which is now a soccer field. It became known as the Ivy Bridge in the early 1900s. Today, it is a beautiful park feature adopted by Ingram Micro. bfloparks.org/adopt

Buffaloโ€™s beautiful park system was designed 150 years ago by Americaโ€™s first landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. In the 1950โ€™s, construction of the Scajaquada Expressway divided and destroyed acres of parkland the jewel of Olmstedโ€™s system, Delaware Park. Right now, we have an unprecedented opportunity to reverse this mistake and restore Olmstedโ€™s legacy โ€“ but only if we can convince the Governor to help us .

Please make your voice heard by signing our petition. Tell the NYS DOT to rethink its current short-sighted plan and join with the community on a comprehensive approach that would reunite the park and reconnect the community, improve accessibility through safe complete streets, and enhance the economic vitality of this corridor for our City. We wonโ€™t have this chance again for another 75 years. https://www.change.org/p/new-york-state-department-of-transportation-save-delaware-park-restore-olmsted-s-legacy

Your Voice Matters! Help us reunite the park and reconnect communities.

: Frederick Law Olmsted favored water views above all others for their ability to soothe and uplift the human spirit. When Olmsted came to Buffalo in 1868, Front Park, at the confluence of Lake Erie and the Niagara River, attracted his attention and became one of three proposed locations for the future Buffalo Olmsted Park System. BOPC believes the design philosophy for a new boulevard first and foremost should be in harmony with the surrounding historic landscape. Within Delaware Park, โ€œharmonyโ€ is to be defined as the least possible intrusion for the park user experience. Please share your comments about this project with the NYSDOT by emailing [email protected] by Aug 22, 2017.
