Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts - BAVPA Buffalo Public School #192 - The Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts. Middle and High School page

Grades 5 - 12
Excellent educational preparation for careers or future study
in music, dance, theatre, visual art, and media! Competitive and extracurricular sports for boys and girls! Advance Placement courses (college level) in English, Social Studies,
Science, Math, Foreign Language, and the Arts! The Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts was founded as part of the desegregation plan in

1977. The goal was simple: provide an exciting college preparatory program for students in the arts and academics that will attract all races and ethnicities. Since our beginnings at 333 Clinton Street, the school has grown in numbers and in depth. In September 2007, we moved to our new location at 450 Masten Avenue into an arts facility that is both beautiful and up-to-date with technologies to give our students a competitive edge. We are proud to claim many very successful alumnae, including Jessie L. Martin (Law & Order, RENT), Ani DiFranco (recording artist, founder of Righteous Babe Record label and "Babeville"), Claudine Ewing (WGRZ-TV), Pete Gallivan (WGRZ-TV), Stefan Mychajliw (former TV reporter for WGRZ/WKBW, former Public Relations Officer for BPS), Ramona Thomas-Reynolds (Principal of MLK Multicultural Institute), Jody Covington (Assistant Principal at Arts Academy), Carmen Intorre (percussionist/drummer, graduate of Juilliard School of Music), George Davis (current music teacher at Arts Academy), Nicole Jones (current dance teacher at Arts Academy), and many more. Currently, our students continue to exceed NYS targets for academic performance in similar schools from grades 5-12. Our students produce award-winning visual art work, participate in All County and all WNY musical groups, perform with the Buffalo Philharmonic, dance in the NYS School for the Arts summer program (competitive), and are recognized for excellence in various aspects of theatrical work. The school is presently partnered with Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Centre through an Empire State Partnership grant (NYS Council on the Arts). This most important partnership focuses on integrating the various arts experiences as well as helping students and staff to discover where artistic knowledge and other knowledge naturally intersect. Please support our major partner, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Centre.

The Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts Music Department is proud to present its unique arrangement of “Come Together,” by The Beatles. Featuring original lyrics and multiple styles, this performance showcases our students in grades 7-12. Under extraordinary circumstances, our students redefined what it means to collaborate as an ensemble. In a time of social unrest and isolation, this project represents community, authenticity, and hope. The best is yet to come at Performing Arts!

We invite you to join the BAVPA family.

LYRICS:

Welcome to BAVPA, it's been far too long
We've had some time apart but we must carry on
11 months have past we're finally clear
Strings, guitar, band, vocals, PAs got it all here

We’ve come so far along this crazy path
We stand united no matter how hard things get
We are strong, determined, resilient, and kind
We have compassion for each other as we find peace of mind

Come Together, Stay Strong, We Are Here

Bienvenidos todo mi gente
It’s been tough, but we are tougher
Staying home con su familia
Losing loved ones, hold your familia
Close we stick together
while life keeps getting harder
Abuela’s cooking y watching novelas con su tía, all night
In the Heights!

Come Together, Stay Strong, We Are Here

Standing strong together
Memories here forever
We know how hard it was
But standing strong we fight 'cause it's our right
Through protest and COVID
We’ll fight till the dawn alright
We’ve had problems we've fought every battle
But we stayed strong through all of these crazy hassles
Be the change and you will soar
You’re enough just as you are

Come Together, Stay Strong, We Are Here

While we can't stage our annual Black History presentation, we instead created an interactive, digital storytelling experience: Know Her Name, a Celebration of Black Women.

This digital space was created by students as an acknowledgment of the strength, love, and leadership stored in the hearts of black women.

On this site, students will find an opportunity to watch student-produced artworks, share their own stories, and link to interactive experiences. Work will continue to be added to this site as we move into Women's History Month. https://www.buffaloartsacademy.org/know-her-name

On this National Day of Service, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr., we look to two great civil rights leaders that we lost this year.

Under the direction of Ms. Kelly Beuth, our High School theatre students wrote and recorded monologues for this special podcast production. The students studied the lives and works of John Lewis and Ruth Bader Ginsburg as they spent their lives fighting for us because they didn't see any other choice.

You can listen to the full-length podcast at the link in our bio.
