There are moments and individuals in all of our lives that impact us forever. We learn about life and ourselves through them. Here at SABAH, we call them gamechangers. Somewhere between skating on the ice, playing on the turf and interacting with others, SABAH’s athletes discover their endless potential. And as we continue to provide these moments to our athletes, we are constantly reminded of how they impact us as well. They, themselves, are the ultimate gamechangers.

Emily Reinhart
January Athlete of the Month

We are ready to ring in 2021 on a high note! And, there’s no better way to celebrate a new year than with the honorary “sweetheart” of the Northtown Center at Amherst Rink, Emily Reinhart! Not only has Emily been participating in SABAH for over 26 years (she began skating with SABAH when she was just four years old!), but she also serves as a volunteer for both the School Day program and the Northtown Center at Amherst Sunday morning program. In addition to her contributions as an athlete and a volunteer, Emily serves as a receptionist for the SABAH office, contributes to the organization’s fundraising events, and is one of the most supportive individuals on SABAH’s social media outlets.

In each capacity, Emily adds joy wherever she goes. Always smiling, she has a very angelic face with sparkling blue eyes. But you can’t let that completely fool you! Emily also has a very witty and playful sense of humor. During her Fridays at the office, she enjoys reminding everyone, and most especially Sheila O’Brien, that she is the true boss of the office. To acknowledge that fact, there is a sign on Sheila’s desk that confirms that Emily is the actual leader of the organization.

“Emily makes the day fun for us. The best part of Emily is that she is so tender and sweet that, quite often, her small glints of mischievous humor will take you by surprise. She’s so kind and thoughtful, but she still gets a twinkle in her eye when she is up to something!” states SABAH’s Executive Director Sheila O’Brien.

Emily has also worked diligently over the years to improve her skating skills. With the support of her longtime volunteer partner and childhood friend, Anna Haumeser, Emily has progressed to the most advanced group at the Northtown Center at Amherst program.

As someone who brings such joy to our organization, we are grateful to begin this new year by naming Emily Reinhart as the 2021 January Athlete of the Month!

(While we enjoy this moment to celebrate Emily, we also would like to share our gratitude for the entire Reinhart family! Emily’s parents, Joe and Lisa, as well as Emily’s siblings, Nick (and Samantha), Molly (and Nole) and Noah; and Emily’s grandmother, Barbara Ann Wilhoff (deceased), have all been remarkably supportive of Emily. Additionally, Lisa worked in the SABAH office for many years, only retiring recently. Their love and support of Emily has made her the joyful, strong, and kind young woman that she is today. Yet, in addition to their support of Emily, they also continue to contribute to the organization in innumerable ways, making an incredible impact on all of SABAH’s athletes. On behalf of the entire organization, we remain grateful for their love and support!)

This photo was taken just over nine months ago.....although now it seems like an eternity ago.

On March 8, 2020, over 800 SABAH athletes challenged by disability performed in the season-ending Celebration on Ice in front of thousands of friends and family members at the KeyBank Center. Just weeks later, "stay at home” restrictions were issued in our community and across the country.

While nearly everyone has encountered some hardship over the past year, those in our community challenged by disability have faced some of the most difficult physical, social, and emotional challenges resulting from the pandemic.

As a result, we kept going.

As early as April, we adapted our programming to both online and (safely distanced) outdoor programs to keep our athletes physically active and socially engaged. Even now, as we look forward to the end of the pandemic, we are preparing to offer more socially distanced, outdoor programs throughout the next several months.

Your support makes the difference!!

As you consider your year-end giving, we would be very grateful for your support of SABAH athletes. To adopt an athlete for the year ($250 donation to adopt an athlete for the year), go to https://sabahinc.org/adopt-an-athlete/ or to make a donation (any amount is greatly appreciated!) go to www.sabahinc.org/donate. As always, thank you for your support of SABAH athletes!

(Great news! Friends of SABAH, Dave and Martha Wright, have generously offered to match your "Adopt An Athlete" donation up to $25,000!!!)

Wishing you a Merry Christmas, SABAH!

We have big news!! The Children's Guild Foundation has granted SABAH $35,200 to expand The Children's Guild Foundation's Summer Athletes Bold At Heart program as soon as it is safe to do so!

We don't mention often enough just how much his photos mean to us!! Each year, we are incredibly thankful for the talent of Fred Bressette and, quite often, his daughter Claire, as they graciously take the amazing photos that we share with you each year. Fred and Claire uniquely capture the joy, hard work, exhilaration, camaraderie, and more through their photography. As we near the end of another calendar year, we wanted to take a moment to thank them for the time and effort they kindly donate to SABAH! We are so grateful!

Ready for some good news as we near the end of 2020?! (add big sigh of relief!)
Join us in congratulating Jason Kasniak for being named SABAH's 2020 December Athlete of the Month!

Read more here:
“Yee Haa!” Everyone in the Hamburg Town Rink knows that Jason is about to take the ice when he lets out his big trademark greeting! From the moment he walks through the doors on Saturday mornings, Jason has a smile on his face and an eagerness to take the ice. His positivity is inspirational, as Jason overcomes the multiple challenges of cerebral palsy, visual impairment, and hearing impairment to skate with SABAH. Skating takes a lot of effort for Jason, but he is so eager to participate that his group home staff is the first to contact the SABAH at the beginning of the year to make sure he is registered.

In addition to being a hard worker, Jason also likes to laugh and joke with his fellow SABAH athletes. He enjoys talking to everyone and lights up when the music starts to play. As he says hello to each person he passes, he immediately begins looking for “Chuckie,” which is Leo McGorry in disguise.

Although Jason began skating at the Amherst Rink in 2001, he moved to the Hamburg Town Rink approximately 10 years ago. Since that time, he has flourished with the support of his dedicated volunteer partner, Dan Wagner. As Dan states, “Jason’s eyes light up once he is out on the ice. His favorite game is ‘Kick the Cones’ and he laughs the entire time we play the game!! Jason loves SABAH!!“

Although Jason began skating at the Amherst Rink in 2001 when he was just 12 years old, the 31 year-old young man has now become an important part of the SABAH “family” at the Hamburg Town Rink. As an inspirational example of the strength and perseverance needed to overcome the challenges of disability, SABAH is pleased to name Jason Kasniak the 2020 December Athlete of the Month!

We have exciting news to share with you about The Children's Guild Foundation's Summer Athletes Bold At Heart program very soon! Stay tuned! In the meantime, enjoy these memories from the past 10 years of the program!!

11/23/2020

Dear SABAH athletes and volunteers:

This year continues to challenge us. But we also believe there is no one more up to the challenge than a SABAH athlete!

So, here we go again! Just as we were preparing to resume programming, the COVID numbers in our community have, once again, started to climb quite high. Even with the strictest protocols in place, we have become uncomfortable with beginning our Evening and Weekend programs on December 1st. We are as disappointed as you probably are, but the health and safety of our athletes and volunteers are our top priority.

Once again, we will be postponing the program to monitor the numbers and watch for hopeful news about vaccine and/or treatment protocols that will create a safe environment for everyone. Since we cannot accurately predict when things will improve, we plan to stay in touch with you via email and our social media accounts regarding opening dates. We will also update our website (www.sabahinc.org) with information when it becomes available. (If you have already registered and paid for the season, we will make an adjustment to your account when we have a confirmed start date.)

Until then, hang in there and stay active (safely!)! And, stay posted. We hope to see you very soon!

We Miss You!!!

11/22/2020

Thank you, all! Even in the most difficult times, you enthusiastically shared your support for SABAH athletes! We just can't thank you enough!
