There are moments and individuals in all of our lives that impact us forever. We learn about life and ourselves through them. Here at SABAH, we call them gamechangers. Somewhere between skating on the ice, playing on the turf and interacting with others, SABAH’s athletes discover their endless potential. And as we continue to provide these moments to our athletes, we are constantly reminded of how they impact us as well. They, themselves, are the ultimate gamechangers.

Dear SABAH Friends:

Many regional businesses have felt the dramatic impact of the pandemic. One of those is Colvin Cleaners. However, in spite of all of the difficulties that have transpired this year, Colvin Cleaners marked their 25th year of giving to SABAH. Once again, this year's Gala will feature two very generous gift cards to Colvin Cleaners.

In response to their tremendous generosity even in these difficult times, we are pleased to share this letter on their behalf:

For years, Colvin Cleaners has given back to WNY through our community programs: Coats 4 Kids and Gowns for Prom. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we felt it. Dry cleaners were deemed an essential business in New York State as we cleaned and sanitized clothing and uniforms for first responders and hospital employees, but we still had to lay off a number of our employees due to lack of volume.

We are a business that depends on people going out and wearing clothing to work, restaurants or social gatherings. When all of that went on pause, so did most of our incoming business. But, as an essential business, we were required to stay open -- so we did.

And we did not stop our philanthropic efforts. We brought back most of our tailors and started making washable, reusable face masks and gave them away for free to our customers. We have now donated masks to dozens of nonprofits and are responsible for 35,000+ masks distributed to people in WNY. And in 2020, we have still continued donating time and money to 400+ local WNY charities.

You can learn more about that story and our #GetAMaskGiveAMask program here.

COATS 4 KIDS | As the 25th anniversary of Coats 4 Kids approaches this Fall/Winter, we are asking that nonprofits coordinate with us to receive coats, hats, scarves, gloves, and boots to distribute to the communities they serve. If your nonprofit would like to participate, you can learn more and sign up here.

CAN YOU HELP? | Please share this and recommend our dry cleaning and laundry service to your database. We offer FREE Pick Up & Delivery all over WNY and we are the only environmentally-friendly dry cleaner in WNY so our cleaning methods are safer for your skin, your clothes, and the environment.

Thank you for your support, and for your referrals. Stay safe & well,

Paul

Congratulations to our October Athlete of the Month, Christopher Rose!!!

Read more about Christopher here:

Christopher Rose
2020 October Athlete of the Month

Christopher Rose rarely misses a Wednesday evening SABAH session at Niagara University’s Dwyer Arena. Since 2002, SABAH has watched Christopher grow from a seven-year old child to a delightful 25 year old young man.

Although Chris is nonverbal, he has a tremendous ability to communicate his love for music! Many weeks, he points to SABAH’s boom box in an effort to get the music playing. His love for music runs so deep that he will often grab the hands of an instructor or volunteer to get them to clap along. Chris is frequently seen holding the hands of his dedicated volunteer partner, Allie Bush, as he joyfully persuades her to join him in clapping to the beat of the music.

Over the past several years, SABAH has seen Chris’s confidence and enthusiasm increase because of his partnership with Allie Bush. As Chris grew into an adult, his balance shifted and he grew increasingly fearful on the ice. Allie’s gentle encouragement enabled Chris to gain confidence and improve his skills so that he could return to the advanced group. “It’s been a great joy to watch Chris overcome his fear to grow stronger and more confident,” states SABAH’s Director of Programming Carrie Drabik. “It reminds us of what can happen when a dedicated volunteer joins together with a determined SABAH athlete---the improvement in Chris’s skating abilities has been incredible.”

Year after year, Chris continues to be one of the most enthusiastic participants in SABAH’s Niagara University Wednesday evening program. Before the Zamboni is finished cleaning the ice from the previous session, Chris is waiting by the door to be the first one out on the rink. With great appreciation for the joy and commitment he brings to SABAH, we are pleased to name Christopher Rose as the 2020 October Athlete of the Month.

Dear SABAH athletes:
We are excited to announce that we can finally begin the 2020-2021 Evening and Weekend skating season on December 1st! At the time of this email (because guidelines keep changing), we are sharing some of the temporary changes you will need to be aware of before participating in this year's Evening and Weekend programs:

1. To start the season, all SABAH athletes will attend their Evening and Weekend sessions every other week. Since we have a capacity limit on the number of people allowed in the rink at one time, we are going to limit the number of participants by assigning each SABAH athlete to an "every other week" schedule (at least to start the season). Once you choose your Evening and Weekend program/location, we will send you your time slot and schedule as soon as we possibly can.

2. Since each SABAH athlete will be on an alternating schedule to start the season, the cost for the 2020-2021 Evening and Weekend program will be decreased to $150 for each participant. This fee will be payable at the time of registration, unless an arrangement has been made with the SABAH office in advance. (We will not be accepting payment at the rink this year to eliminate the need for additional volunteers and to limit close interactions.)

3. This year, you will keep your skates and helmet with you for the entire season to eliminate close interactions and the need for additional volunteers (counted in the capacity limits at the rink). As a result, each participant must sign an equipment rental agreement that allows SABAH to charge your account $85 if equipment is not returned in good condition. Since you will be keeping your skates and helmet with you, don't forget to bring them to the rink each week! Also, the rinks will not have skate rentals available this year, so it is important that you remember your equipment!

4. When it comes to additional family members, group home members, or caregivers; the fewer the better! Every person who enters the rink counts against capacity limitations – and, at the time of this email, we are limited to just 25 skaters on the ice and a limited number of spectators. So please help us by sending just one caregiver/parent/guardian into the rink. If restrictions ease throughout the year (and we hope they do!), we will allow more people into the rink.

5. We are requiring all SABAH athletes, volunteers, and staff members to wear a mask inside the rink. If, because of disability, a mask cannot be worn, please contact our Director of Programming, Carrie Drabik, at [email protected] to discuss. We will also require you to complete a very brief health questionnaire at the door and ask that you use hand sanitizer (available at the entrance) upon entering the rink. And, as always, please do not attend any skating session if you are feeling ill, have had a fever, or have possibly been exposed to someone with Covid. It’s up to us to protect each other!

6. In addition to the normal waiver, all SABAH athletes and volunteers must have a signed Covid waiver (on the registration form) to participate in any of SABAH's programs. SABAH will be taking all reasonable precautions to keep our participants, volunteers, and staff safe; but it is important that you understand your own health risks, as well as weigh the risks of participation, to decide if you should participate in any of SABAH's programs.

We are excited to see everyone again! We know we will have to work together to keep everyone safe and active, but we are very eager to start the season (finally!). Register now for SABAH's Evening and Weekend programs. Once you register, we will be sending you the most updated information for starting the new season.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
Sheila O’Brien
Executive Director

As part of the #buffalo60strong contest, our own James "Ozzie" Osiadlo was the star of a photo shoot at the Buffalo Zoo!! He was photographed with his grandson, Liam. The pair will be featured in a 2021 Buffalo60Strong calendar, an exclusive calendar showcasing inspirational "60 somethings" and highlighting Buffalo events and activities. In addition to appearing in the calendar, winners receive "celebrity treatment" – a virtual kick-off party, professional photo shoot and compensation for their modeling time!

All of the proceeds of the calendar will be donated to Hospice and Palliative Care Buffalo.

And, we can't wait to see the final product! We're proud of you, Ozzie!

We are pleased to share that our nominee, James "Ozzie" Osiadlo has been named a winner of the Buffalo 60 Strong Contest! And, we wanted to share our submission with everyone...

Nomination for James “Ozzie” Osiadlo

We know him as "Ozzie." James "Ozzie" Osiadlo has been a fun-loving, caring volunteer for SABAH's athletes challenged by disability for 21 years. When he walks into the ice rink to volunteer for children and adults with disabilities, you instantly hear everyone calling “Ozzie” or “Oz,” to gain his attention and, mostly, to be around his enthusiastic and positive personality. If we told you he had a “twinkle” in his smile, we believe you could pick him out of a crowd without ever seeing a photo of him beforehand. That’s how much Ozzie shines, both in his personality and in his physical presence.

When Ozzie was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease several years ago, he never wavered or paused his volunteer service for SABAH athletes. His first response was a combination of defiance and optimism, as he immediately began to battle the disease with physical activity and a determined spirit. Based upon advice from doctors and others diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, Ozzie took up boxing at Parkinson’s Boxing. The class was specifically designed for those with Parkinson’s; and Ozzie took to it with tremendous zeal. As he progressed through the classes, he increased his skills and improved his stamina. By his own account and the observations of his doctor, the boxing classes seemed to slow, if not thwart, the progression of the disease. But when the pandemic hit and the gyms were closed, all of Ozzie’s hard work was in jeopardy, as he was unable to do the very activity that made the most impact on his health. With the same optimism that he demonstrated at his diagnosis, Ozzie started walking. And not just around the neighborhood… Ozzie began walking 6 to 8 miles a day around a cemetery near his home, regardless of weather or his busy schedule. At 67 years of age, he is in the best shape of his life; and most likely, in better shape than the majority of men half his age.

In addition to being a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather; Ozzie is also a faithful advocate for his daughter, Alex, a high functioning individual with Down Syndrome. Mindful of his daughter’s future wellbeing, Ozzie pushes Alex to be a fiercely independent and thoughtful young woman.

To us, at SABAH, Ozzie is the most remarkable human symbol of Buffalo60Strong – he is the epitome of what it takes to be inspiring in mind, body, and spirit.

Congratulations, Ozzie!
