"We got this!" Wonderful words of encouragement from SABAH instructor, Abby Adams!
SABAH is dedicated to the mission of enriching the quality of life for individuals challenged by physical, cognitive, and/or emotional disability by providing education and therapeutic recreation, promoting fitness, & developing social & communication.
There are moments and individuals in all of our lives that impact us forever. We learn about life and ourselves through them. Here at SABAH, we call them gamechangers. Somewhere between skating on the ice, playing on the turf and interacting with others, SABAH’s athletes discover their endless potential. And as we continue to provide these moments to our athletes, we are constantly reminded of how they impact us as well. They, themselves, are the ultimate gamechangers.
SABAH, a 501(c)(3) organization, is dedicated to the mission of enriching the quality of life for individuals challenged by physical, cognitive, and/or emotional disability by providing education and therapeutic recreation, promoting fitness, and developing social and communication skills. An important part of SABAH's School Day programs is The Children's Guild Foundation's Summer Athletes Bold At Heart program. Each year, beginning now, SABAH would typically provide adaptive recreation on a sport court surface for over 430 children challenged by disability from regional schools each week. But this year is a bit different! While schools remain closed, SABAH's Director of Programming, Carrie Drabik, and instructors Abby Adams and Shannon Haugeto are adapting the program to an online format. In just days, they have converted our warehouse to a studio! Because of the strong support of The Children's Guild Foundation and the creativity of our staff, the program will go on!
While we are always grateful for the strong support of The Children's Guild Foundation, their willingness to allow us to quickly adapt to changing circumstances will mean that children with special needs from our community will continue to improve across physical, control, and academic domains during this season (and when it is the most needed!). On behalf of all the children we serve, thank you to The Children's Guild Foundation!
Happy Mother's Day!
She always brings us joy.... please join us in congratulating the Athlete of the Month, Elena Collins!!!
Read about Elena here -->
She lives, laughs, and loves large. Elena Collins has so much love to give that she can barely contain it. From across a room, you can hear Elena call your name as she approaches you with outstretched arms and a big smile. “You can learn a lot about how to live from Elena,” states Executive Director Sheila O’Brien. “She is just bursting with love and affection. When you hear Elena’s voice, you get an immediate sense of warmth because you know you are about to be hugged and made to feel loved.”
Since she was just 9 years old, Elena has been skating with SABAH. The majority of her nearly 23 years with the organization has been spent in the Sunday morning program at the Northtown Center at Amherst where she has steadily improved with each season. Her enthusiastic attitude has been the primary force behind her rise to the most advanced group two years ago. Since that time, she has become a leader and role model in Group 3. If she is distracted by anything, it is her concern for her fellow athletes as she compassionately checks on each of them and makes sure they are all doing well. Director of Programming, Carrie Drabik, notes, “Her high energy is noted by everyone and many in the group gravitate toward her because of her positivity.”
Elena is also a big contributor to SABAH’s fundraising events, such as the Starlight Night Auction and Gala. She is a dream ambassador for the organization because she proudly proclaims her love for SABAH and even calls out our guests to give a little more during the Adopt An Athlete portion of the program. Yet, she does it with such exuberance and innocence that everyone can’t help but smile and give a little more.
For over two decades, Elena has brought tremendous energy and kindness to everyone in the organization. She also teaches us how to live with unbridled joy and enthusiasm, a lesson we need now more than ever. For that, we are incredibly grateful. Please join us in congratulating Elena Collins as the 2020 May Athlete of the Month.
Join us in congratulating SABAH athlete Mikayla Forsey!
Here is Mikayla.
Here is why she is a warrior - she survived birth, even when doctors told her mother to terminate the pregnancy because survival was slim. She was born blind and underwent multiple surgeries before the age of 6.
Her mom says she has looked forward to Mik's high school graduation, "Since she started early intervention at 3-months-old."
Mik will not have the opportunity to finish out the school year with her classmates. She will not have the opportunity to walk across stage in her cap and gown.
So - WHAT CAN WE DO TO SHOW HER SOME LOVE?
A note from Leo!
If anyone is interested, My wife Laurie works at a bike shop in the village of Hamburg called Love & Sprockets.

Congratulations to our Athlete of the Month for April, Peter Colbey!!
Read more about Peter here -->
SABAH athlete Peter Colbey is energetic, athletic, and FAST! On Saturday mornings at the Hamburg Town Rink, Peter is the speediest of the SABAH athletes as he flies around the rink with great enthusiasm. At just 17 years of age, Peter has been a faithful participant in the Saturday morning program for over 11 years. A tremendously capable skater, Peter challenges his fellow athletes (and volunteers) in Group 3, the rink’s most advanced group, to keep up with him.
Peter is also the entertainer of the Hamburg Rink. With a talent for doing remarkable impersonations, Peter will entertain the group with his lively impressions of Donald Duck and other “celebrities.” Peter is destined to be a star, as he dreams of one day becoming a game show host. His outgoing personality makes Peter a superstar at the Hamburg Town Rink already!
Peter’s energy also extends into SABAH’s other programs, including the Adaptive Ice Hockey program and the Summer Clinics. When it comes to sports, Peter is one of SABAH’s most enthusiastic athletes. In addition to SABAH’s programming, Peter also participates in many of the organization’s special events. By request, Peter is an annual coach at SABAH’s Kickstock Kickball Tournament for team Tom Rennie and the Heartbreakers. A true inspirational leader, Peter drives his team with his passionate “pump up” speeches and clever game strategy.
“Peter is a SABAH athlete that just makes you smile all the time,” states SABAH’s Executive Director, Sheila O’Brien. “He’s out there doing all kinds of impersonations and making jokes, and then he takes off around the rink at lightning speed. He has incredible energy and it spills over to everyone in the rink.” For all of his contributions to SABAH for more than a decade, we are pleased to name Peter Colbey as the 2020 April Athlete of the Month! Congratulations, Peter!!
Here's one of our happiest SABAH athletes, Joseph Hansen, "safely" staying in shape by riding his bike with his dad, Robbin! Let us know how you are staying in shape at a safe distance from others. We'd love to hear from you! (We miss you!)
