Today, is the first time that schools across New York State are closed in recognition of the Lunar New Year, also know as Chinese New Year. It’s considered to be the most important holiday in China and celebrated by millions of Asians worldwide with festivals, parades, educational events, traditional foods and decorations.
City Honors is home to the largest Mandarin Language program in upstate New York with over 350 students in grades 5-12 studying Mandarin each year. As a part of our recognition of this new holiday, the CHS Chinese Club has organized a performance of “友谊地久天长,” or the Mandarin version of “Auld Lang Syne.”
“Auld Lang Syne,” written by Robert Burns in 1788, is an important part of Western culture, as it is sung to celebrate the American New Year. “友谊地久天长,” which translates to “Friendship Lasts Forever,” is used to celebrate passing times and the people who spent those times with us.
Special thanks to Chinese Club co-presidents Maggie Giancola '25 and Henry Hohle '25 for organizing the performance, along with Mrs. Zheng, Mrs. Lu, Noah Doktor '25, and Zeki Özay '25.
Chinese Club wishes everyone a Happy Chinese New Year!
