This post is to announce the Station Niagara Loss of Crewmen Memorial Design Contest.
This contest is being sponsored by Eastern Great Lakes CPOA.
Back ground info: On March 24, 2001 Station Niagara lost 2 of their crew in an unfortunate accident. Due to this accident and loss of life, changes were put in place that changed the small boat community forever. I will post articles and the "Final Action Message" that tells the story and how it changed the way the Coast Guard does business.
A Memorial was erected back in March 2011 and Officially Commemorated in a Ceremony on 23 March 2011, but a couple years back a storm and rising water levels in lake Ontario has destroyed it and made it necessary to move the location of the memorial. I have attached pictures of the old Memorial and Pictures of the new location.
The Eastern Great Lakes Chapter of the CPOA is sponsoring a Design the Memorial contest. We have a lot of talented people out there that could come up with a great design, this is to include all members in the Sector Buffalo AOR (A-Bay to Lorain). The winning design will receive a $200.00 gift card and have their name on the memorial as "designed by".
Now the good stuff-
Details for the design: We have the Bell and both of the plaques that you see in pictures: Memorial 1 & 2. The size of the New Location you have to work with in the pictures is 18'W x 38'.
Please have all designed submitted by 01 July 2020.
Please help us memorialize this event that changed the Coast Guard.
