The Buffalo & Erie County Public Library sends sincere condolences to the family of George K. Arthur, a champion for equality in the city he was born in and loved. The former Common Council president, who died this past weekend, was a leader in the fields of education, housing, economic and community development. We will all miss George K. Happy Kwanzaa from all of us at Leroy R. Coles Jr. Branch Library! Thanks to PUSH Buffalo for writing this informative history of the holiday.

Kwanzaa, which starts today and goes through January 1st, was founded in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, then a leader of a community organization in Los Angeles called Us, and modeled after the harvest or “first fruits” celebrations in ancient Egypt, West Africa’s New Yam Festival and other celebrations on the African continent.

Kwanzaa has seven core principles, or Nguzo Saba: Unity, self-determination, collective world and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.

May we recommit to live these principles every day of the year.

Happy Kwanzaa!

Local author announces release of new novel. "Mollie's Follies" is about young, beautiful Mary Lynn Sharp, aka Mollie. Abandoned by family, this fifteen-year-old is on the run. Reviving from a two-week coma, Mollie's first thought is of the last conversation she overheard, where paramedics are discussing which Missouri hospital, Branson or Springfield, is best equipped to treat her horrific injures. A great summer read, "Mollie's Follies," provides fast-paced action, swift-changing story-lines, and thought-provoking perspectives. https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/bookshelf https://www.amazon.com/author/bonnie.mill-lemke
