Four people believed to be homeless died in the Buffalo blizzard. How others found safety

About 900 people, including children and families, are homeless on any given night in Erie County, according to homeless outreach workers. Given the ferocity and duration of the recent blizzard, advocates for the homeless expressed a sense of relief the death toll wasn’t higher, especially among the region’s most vulnerable populations – those living unsheltered and on the streets. However, That does not override the sadness over the lives that were lost due to the storm.

Yesterday we picked up a generous donation of socks, cold weather items, and personal care kits collected by the compassionate employees of Columbus McKinnon Corporation in Getzville. The timing could not have been more perfect, as we were about to enter an epic arctic cold snap today - severe weather that will most certainly impact the wellbeing of the hundreds of unhoused people of Buffalo we serve (yes, homelessness is a significant issue in our city).

Thank you Emily Konisky, Central Customer Service Supervisor, and colleagues, for reaching out to us and for rallying your troops! Columbus McKinnon is a 150-year-old, Buffalo-born corporation. Though their reach is global, we are grateful that their heart and soul rests in our community. Thank you friends.

Recovery means changing our lives, not just our biochemistry. Restoration Society, Inc. programs address peoples’ lives - daily living, life roles, meaningful engagement in our world. “Treatment” (medication, psychotherapy, etc.), may be important for recovery. But treatment without strength-based, person-centered, trauma-informed, recovery-oriented supports often leaves a person disempowered, unengaged, and feeling hopeless. Recovery is much more than treatment.

Affirm dignity by listening, supporting, respecting. All of our programs at Restoration Society, Inc. support the dignity of choice. "Person-first" means focusing on the individual's values and preferences when planning goals, and not on their mental health "illness" (mental health condition). We incorporate a person-first approach in our ACE Employment Services by following a Supported Employment Model, which supports a person in choosing, getting, and keeping a competitive job, based in the individual's self-determined criteria. Our Housing Solutions program helps people to find safe, affordable housing in the communities THEY choose. Learn more about us at www.RSIWNY.org

They hire the best person for the job, regardless of criminal history. They have witnessed first-hand that someone’s past does not define their future, and that sometimes giving someone a chance is all they need to become a “Good Seed”.

One third of this bread company's employees have a criminal background. The employer believes in giving people a second chance.

Eliminating services does not eliminate the people who need services. During the Restoration Society provided shelter to over 200 people each night. Where would these people have gone during this historic storm? Lives were saved.

Today we said goodbye to Terrell. For over 30+ years he was part of our Restoration Society, Inc. community. The stories shared today brought him to life again in our minds and hearts. As much as Terrell loved to “dis” the Bills (he was a steadfast Dolphins fan), we confidently know that this was simply his way of being present and connected with those he chose to surround himself with in this life. We miss his passion, his humor, his opposing viewpoints, and his beautiful blue eyes.

After a heartwarming service facilitated by our friend Antonio, and lots of tearful-but-fond memories, we ceremoniously released balloons to the wind (in the colors of the Miami Dolphins, of course). Thank you Terrell for gracing us with your life. May your spirit persist in our community (when you are not hovering over Miami). Peace and gratitude, friend. Go Bills!

The homeless woman who made photo-booth art

When you read about Godie there’s always the sentence that states she “spent almost 30-years homeless” or “lived on the streets for nearly thirty years.” The “nearly” and “almost” make it sound cosy—make it all sound like an heroic failure—as if she didn’t quite succeed in living rough for the full thirty years—as in the way we say—she nearly came first in the race or she almost won the lottery. One night sleeping rough on the streets is hell enough for anyone—especially in those cold Chicago winters where the temperature can drop to -30 in the windchill and the radio broadcasts give advice on breathing in through the mouth and out through the nose to prevent nosebleeds.

Lee Godie (1908-1994) was an outsider artist who spent three decades living rough on the streets of Chicago—with the occasional respite in a flophouse when she had cash. When you read about Godie there’s always the sentence that states she “spent almost 30-years homeless” or “lived on t....
