Red Ted Art

Oh my how fabulous are these?!
We want 10,000 Blue Bins to be transformed in 2012 to become artful and productive container gardens. Be proud of your container garden and share photos of your art work on it and of the plants you grow inside it.
Buffalo Recycling Gardens is an ReUse-Art-Gardening-Community Building project for 2012. Here's a little background: During the Winter and Early Spring of 2012, the City of Buffalo began a new recycling program that included the delivery of large, wheeled and lidded totes. Expanding a recycling program is usually a good idea; this one is no different. By leaving the old blue bins, the City left its residents a great opportunity. Buffalo Recycling Garden encourages residents to REUSE their old blue recycling bins as container gardens. Paint them with RE-PURPOSED LATEX PAINT from your basement. Grow FRESH VEGETABLES. The month of May brings Buffalo's growing season to your Bin Garden and the beginning of Buffalo Recycling Garden's Season of Prep, Paint and Plant Parties. Join your friends and neighbors to sand, prime, paint and plant your new Bin Garden. Think of the possibilities presented by Companion Gardening. In the coming months, keep an eye out for tips on reclaiming a plastic bin for this purpose. Plastic requires a little effort if you want to paint it. Believe me, people should paint them. Our children NEED to paint them... and to learn to garden. Schools are welcome to participate. Community based organizations and block clubs are encouraged to reach out to their residents to spread the word. With any luck and a good growing season, our artful and productive bins will provide plenty of food for block parties throughout the city in September/October. Who has ideas and skills to share? Do you work or have influence at a school? Who's with us?

I am excited to see some volunteer tomatoes in my garden. I wonder what they'll be....
"Grow, baby, grow," said the gardener to his seeds.
Thanks for the likes. Now go on out there and grow some food or beautiful flowers or both.
A seed gets its chance to wake up and start again. Asked to produce thousands of times its own weight, it does.
April showers bring May flowers.
Tell us what gardening presents you got.
So how were your harvests?
I would like to thank all our friends for jumping on the bandwagon early. Spread the word by sharing our posts and talking up the concept of reusing old and retired containers, making them pretty and growing food like crazy.
At the bottom of this article is a nice chart to help you plan. I think I am going to plant a few bins in my driveway with Corn, Beans/Peas and Cucumbers. This will add privacy to my yard from the street and...well... produce vegetables of course.
Growing vegetables can be rewarding as well as beneficial. However, there are ways of planting that are better than others. Planting some plants together works better than others. For example, planting Marigolds around your garden helps to keep out...
Thanks to a friend for sharing this. I suppose you could do this will other things, too.

Who's getting ready to Party?
Prepping the bins can take a long time (between primer coats), so BRG is offering to prep them for you, in advance of your party. All we need is to get the bins ONE WEEK before your party. We can pick them up and drop them off for your party. So, invite your friends, get their bins, and tell everybody to bring their paint supplies and old paint from the basement.

The first paint project has happened. Four boys aged 4 - 9 painted some sides of our first four project bins. We even have a logo now. Check out the new profile picture.
After researching painting methods, we've discovered a third problem BRBG will solve this Summer. How about a recap?

We are starting to make plans for Prep, Paint and Plant Parties, Folks.
This is a nice resource to help one get to thinking about their Bin Garden and what to plant in it...
I routinely plant what I love to eat fresh (e.g. tomatoes & cucumbers) and things that can be cheaper to grow that to buy (e.g tomatillos and eggplant).
This year, however, will be all about the companion garden in the Bins and in the permanent spaces in my garden (which is small).
Happy growing.
Here you'll find some tips for planning your vegetable garden - from making lists and drawing your garden design to rotating crops, companion planting, and choosing varieties that suit your climate and your needs. Some folks like to plan their garden ahead...
Great work.

We are getting prepared to paint the first bunch of bins with some kids this weekend. Should be fun. Pictures to follow.
Here's a nice article that touts ten good gardening blogs, several of which are dedicated to container gardens.
So where does the solitary urban gardener learn how to grow vegetables in small yards and tiny spaces?
Because we hear it too infrequently... Thank you. Thanks for "Liking us Early."

We've been doing background work on prepping the bins to accept paint. The best we've heard so far is to sand with 120 grit paper and to spray them with a coat of primer. How do you plan on getting yours ready?
