Master of Science in Literacy Education The Literacy Education Master of Science Degree Program prepares students to meet New York State requirements for certification as a literacy specialist. Canisius now offers the literacy graduate program completely on-line. For more information about the on-line literacy education program, visit the program web site. Course sequences in both programs (33 credit hours) provide for certification in one of two areas: pre-K through grade 6 or grade 5 through grade 12. Additional coursework (9 hours) qualifies candidates for certification in both areas. Each concentration in the master's degree in reading education has a component that involves working with children in a clinical setting, specifically testing and tutoring in the area of literacy skills (reading and writing). Candidates complete their practicums with literacy specialists in one of their districts of choice. For more information on the Graduate Literacy Programs, contact Dr. Jennifer Stowe, Director, at (716) 888-3735.
