Tifft Nature Preserve is a 264-acre nonprofit nature refuge dedicated to conservation and environmental education. Go to www.TIFFT.org to learn more about visiting Tifft Nature Preserve! The Preserve was created in 1972 from land purchased by the City of Buffalo for a landfill site. Concerned citizens recognized the ecological importance of the site and convinced the city legislators to plan for t

he area’s preservation. The completed landfill incorporated many safety measures, allowing the land to have a new purpose, a nature preserve which opened in 1976. The land that comprises Tifft Nature Preserve has a fascinating history. It was once part of a huge dairy farm owned by George Washington Tifft and later became a transshipment center, primarily for coal and iron ore. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, Tifft's land was a dumpsite for city refuse. Tifft began its transformation to a nature preserve in the 1970s. Nearly two million cubic feet of solid municipal waste was enclosed in clay and covered with soil excavated from another section of the Preserve. Ponds were enlarged, and trees and wildflowers were planted. Conservation of Tifft’s large cattail marsh helped attract a variety of animals. In 1982, Tifft Farm Nature Preserve became a department of the Buffalo Museum of Science. Its name was later changed to Tifft Nature Preserve, to better reflect its purpose as a preserve rather than a farm. Today, Tifft Nature Preserve maintains a natural setting. Animals from the entire region take advantage of its ponds, marshes, grasslands, and woodlands. It has become the urban sanctuary many people envisioned over thirty years ago. Tifft's Visitor Center can be reached at 716.825.6397 or www.TIFFT.org.

How sharp is your eyesight? 👀 Betcha it's not as good as this red-tailed hawk's!

Red-tailed hawks are known for their incredible vision: it's 8x better than a human's! They can see even a small mouse scampering around on the ground from 100ft in the air and even have a special third eyelid that helps them keep their eyes clean and the wind out of their eyes when they dive on their prey.

This guy just likes to chill in the meadow, though.

Happy Turtles-day! 🐢🐢🐢

Some of you may be takin' things a bit slow today to drag summer out as long as possible before Labor Day Weekend... hopefully, classes in Buffalo Public Schools are taking it easy on their first day of school today too!

Fun fact: the outside temperature helps determine whether a painted turtle will be a male or a female at birth! If they hatch when it's colder, they'll hatch as a male, if it's warmer, they'll be a female.

Not to flirt, but our trails have views worth stopping for...

These female Mallards with their brilliant blue stripes like to hang out in the marshlands under the Heritage Boardwalk at the Preserve.

🦆Quack fact of the day: when you hear a "standard" loud duck quack, it's the sound of a female Mallard! Male ducks' vocal cords are physically different, so they make a quieter, raspier sound.

School starts up again this week for several districts in WNY, but today is the start of meteorological autumn! Soon, we'll hear the crackle and smell the wonderful, sweet scents of leaves under our feet as we wander around the Preserve. 🍂🍁

The smell of autumn comes from gases released by the leaves as the organic compounds and sugars inside them break down.

Every time you take a walk around Tifft, you can take a look into the past and the future at the same time! ⏳

For decades, the land on which the Preserve now sits was part of Buffalo's industrial corridor: grain silos, steel plants and, unfortunately, a landfill.

For the last 50 years, we've been working to revive this slice of nature that was once the Tifft Farm, and before that, it was more akin to the natural marshland that you can take in today! And we hope for the next 50+ years to come, we can continue bringing back natural wonder for everyone in Buffalo to enjoy! 🌱🌳🐟🐸🦆🦉🐝🦋

For 50 years, Tifft Nature Preserve has been a place where discovery takes many forms.

It may be the sight of a bird of prey soaring overhead. It may be a student's first encounter with a native species. It may be the quiet stillness of a trail that helps you reconnect with the natural world. Or it may simply be the realization that a thriving ecological preserve exists right in the heart of Buffalo.

Whatever it may be for you, there's always a discovery to be had at Tifft.

As a department of the Buffalo Museum of Science, Tifft's mission extends beyond protecting an extraordinary natural habitat with an industrial past. It is a living classroom, a place of exploration, and a space where wonder inspires deeper connections to nature and science.

With a new icon inspired by Tifft’s weaving trails, winding waterways, and flourishing plant life, we're excited to introduce a new brand that reflects what Tifft has become, the Buffalo Society of Natural Science’s shared mission to inspire joyful exploration of science and nature, and our ongoing commitment to preserving wonder for all who visit.

⏳50 years ago, the land the Preserve sat on was in the early stages of its recovery from being an industrial dump site.

It's taken us 50 years to get to where we are today: 264 acres of woods, cattail marshes and meadows that give both wildlife and WNYers a refuge from the urban environment of the city of Buffalo. And we are still doing the work to fill the the Preserve with native species, rehab the land and make nature accessible for everyone in our community.

We wonder what the next 50 years will look like at Tifft 🤔
