What Goes Into the Lake? 💧Learn below!⤵
We get many questions on what flows into Buffalo Lake. While it’s easy to focus on the lake in front of us, it’s important to remember that a waterbody is only one piece of a much larger watershed. What's a watershed you might ask.
A watershed is an area of land where all the rain, snowmelt, and streams drain to the same body of water, such as a river, lake, estuary, or ocean. Think of it like a giant funnel. No matter where it starts within that watershed, it eventually ends up in the same river or lake.
The Buffalo Lake sub-watershed includes dozens of creeks, streams, lakes, and wetlands that flow into Buffalo Lake, as you can see from the attached photo. As water flow downstream, it travels across various land types (residential neighborhoods, agricultural fields, parks, woodland areas, to only name a few!) and each land use influences everything from nutrient runoff to sedimentation.
While natural events and wildlife play a factor, healthy shorelines, responsible lawn care, and conservation practices on agricultural land all helps protect our natural areas and improves the water quality that eventually reaches Buffalo Lake.
