🎥 COUNCILMAN RASHEED WYATT SPEAKS: "The System Is Broken"

Post-BMHA Hearing Interview | March 18, 2026
https://www.facebook.com/reel/906413118688968

University District Councilman Rasheed N.C. Wyatt didn't hold back after today's tense BMHA public hearing. In an interview with 7 News WKBWs Jeff Russo, Councilman Wyatt made his position crystal clear:

"The person that's in leadership right now should probably be removed."

💬 WHAT COUNCILMAN WYATT SAID:

On Accountability:

"You can't tell me that you're fixing their issue when some of the same people are still here. Some of them go back as far as 2019."

On Residents' Rights:

"If a person is paying rent, you would address their issue to their satisfaction."

On Systemic Failure:

"The BMHA system structure is broken. We have a housing crisis in Buffalo, and these folks are paying rent and they still have a housing crisis."

On Leadership Change:

"If I'm not doing my job, I won't have a job. I will be voted out. It's the same thing. These people should have that type of support."

On Building New vs. Fixing Old:

"You can't build new and put everything else to the side. You got to do it in concert. The new housing still has the same problems."

📊 THE REALITY:

- Third meeting addressing the same issues
- Complaints dating back 10-12 years unresolved
- 4,000 units across Buffalo
- New construction leaking before residents move in
- Residents paying rent while living in crisis conditions

🔥 COUNCILMAN WYATT'S POSITION:
✊ Structural change is needed in BMHA governance
✊ Leadership should be removed and replaced with someone who has "a heart for these people"
✊ Common Council needs oversight (currently they only appoint, no accountability)
✊ Listen to the people first - it's not about excuses, it's about solutions
✊ Budget must reflect residents' priorities - not just new construction

🎬 WHY THIS INTERVIEW MATTERS:

This is an elected official publicly calling for leadership change at Buffalo's public housing authority. Councilman Wyatt represents one of the largest BMHA developments in his district, and he's saying what residents have been saying for years:

"When they're not happy, I'm not happy."

He's not just showing up. He's taking a stand. And he's putting it on the record.

ATTENTION: Community
There was meeting on July 16, 2025 and one of the topics were concerning Police Oversight.

Here are some highlights:

Key Points

The meeting was postponed at the request of the Buffalo Police Department due to a scheduling conflict, which angered several council members who felt this was unacceptable and disrespectful to the community.

Council members expressed frustration over the lack of police oversight and transparency, citing recent incidents like the Tops market 'INCIDENT' and an incident involving sheriff's deputies that they felt were not properly investigated or communicated to the public.

There was discussion around establishing a civilian review board to provide independent oversight of the police department, which the state attorney general had recommended.

Council members argued that the police department's lack of cooperation and transparency was eroding public trust and that they needed to be held accountable.

Continue to stay tuned and up to date with these Council and community meetings. We plan to keep you informed as we move forward.

"No More Delays: Wyatt Demands Action on Menthol Ban"

"I urge my colleagues to move forward with courage—let's advance this legislation and let it go to court if necessary. That's why we have attorneys. We cannot let the year of sacrifice from our community advocates be in vain.

I want to acknowledge the persistence of the 'No Menthol' advocates who have been working tirelessly for over a year. When I first met with them about 18 months ago, I challenged them to stay committed to this fight—and they have delivered. They've provided us with facts, not rhetoric.

We know there are those who prey on our community whenever they can, believing they can get away with it. We must stand firm and protect our residents."

Buffalo's Fight Against Menthol Sales

Key points:

- The legislation aims to protect marginalized communities from targeted marketing of menthol products.

- Councilman Wyatt frames this as a critical public health issue that "saves lives, not just pontificates"

- Several organizations support the ban, including:

1. NAACP
2. Health Equity Task Force
3. Roswell (described as a "world renowned research organization")
4. Multiple local churches that participated in "No Menthol Sunday"

Rasheed N.C. Wyatt's urgency

- Criticizes the pattern of delaying action on issues affecting marginalized communities
- Points to Buffalo's poor health outcomes as motivation for taking a stand
- Urges colleagues to support the legislation at an upcoming Tuesday meeting
- Emphasizes that to***co companies are "targeting our children"

Councilman Wyatt's words represents a call to action for fellow officials to prioritize public health over potential legal challenges to the proposed menthol ban.

First and foremost, I want to sincerely thank each and every person who stood with me throughout this campaign. To my family, friends, dedicated volunteers, supporters, and to the voters who placed their trust in me — your time, your energy, and your unwavering support have meant more than words can express.

While last night’s outcome was not the result we worked toward, I remain proud of the campaign we ran — one grounded in integrity, accountability, and a deep love for the City of Buffalo. We brought real issues to the forefront, engaged our community in meaningful conversations, and offered a vision centered on fiscal responsibility, transparency, and service to the people.

To the many individuals who knocked doors, made calls, offered words of encouragement, and showed up day after day — thank you for believing in what we were building. You demonstrated the very best of Buffalo’s heart and spirit.

My commitment to serving Buffalo remains unchanged. There is still much work to be done, and I will continue to advocate for what is right and just for this city that raised me.

Again, from the bottom of my heart — thank you.
