One our Bullard Volunteer Fire Department members, EMT Jana Herrera, was on her way to work in Longview, TX when she discovered a duplex on fire. EMT Herrera didnโ€™t hesitate to stop and put herself in harms way to help the residents in this duplex.

EMT Herrera has volunteered in Smith County, TX for the Dixie Volunteer Fire Department before she enlisted. After her return from serving a tour she became a part of the Bullard Volunteer Fire Department.

Given her history of service to her community and nation It is not surprising that EMT Herrera not only notified 9-1-1 but, she assisted the residents from the unit that was on fire, then entered the adjacent occupied unit and assisted the non-ambulatory residents to escape.

The courage to act in the face of an overwhelming situation is a trait that military, law enforcement, prehospital emergency medical providers, and firefighters posses. EMT Herrera is one of those that has that courage and was in right place to help these strangers in need.

We are extremely proud and honored to have EMT Herrera as a member of the Bullard Volunteer Fire Department.

The wildland fire conditions continue to be very challenging. Through your vigilance there was only one wildland fire in the Bullard response area.

Cherokee County is under a BURN BAN. Smith County has not issued a burn ban however, the Texas Department of Environmental Quality prohibits open burning when weather conditions, like now, exist

Yesterday, your Bullard Volunteer Fire Department assisted Lindale with the large wildland fire in Swan, TX. An open burn is a potential cause of this fire.

Please, DO NOT PERFORM OUTDOOR BURNS until the fire conditions improve. You can get the current conditions by visiting:

https://www.weather.gov/shv/fireweather

Through your situational awareness we can significantly reduce the threat of a wildland fire starting.

Information on Prescribed or Controlled Burns

Anytime a fire of concern is observed please call 9-1-1. Posting on Facebook, calling your local fire station, or any other means other than 9-1-1 are not reliable or monitored. A couple of delayed response incidents have occurred where observers assumed 9-1-1 was called by someone else. We would much rather receive several calls to 9-1-1 then none.

The area serviced by the Bullard VFD in Smith and Cherokee counties contains primarily agricultural land.

As a means to maintain soil health and reduce the accumulation of natural ground litter the use of prescribed or controlled burns are performed.

Planning and ex*****on of these burns MAY (not required) involve Texas A&M Forest Service or local fire departments. Most of the agricultural burns are conducted by the landowner. It is their responsibility to ensure the burns do not spread beyond their property.

Texas A&M Forest Service maintains a web page with information on prescribed burns.

https://tfsweb.tamu.edu/forest-land/prescribed-fire/

To avoid unnecessary utilization of fire resources responding and investigating a controlled burn, the landowner should call your local fire department and dispatch center before lighting the burn.
