Helping at Risk Kids - HARK Helping at Risk Kids, Inc. (HARK) serves abused and neglected children, many of whom are identified through the Guardians ad Litem.

HARK is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that provides support and resources for at-risk children in the greater Buncombe County area to promote a safe, enriching, and hopeful future. HARK was formerly known as the Guardian ad Litem Association (GALA) of Buncombe County. The name change allows us to (a) expand our mission beyond at-risk children currently in protective custody under the state’s

social service system, and (b) remove confusion with the Guardians ad Litem who acts as the voice of the children in family court. We have a vision that vulnerable children, including every abused and/or neglected child, will have the support they need to succeed and to grow up in a safe, stable, and nurturing environment. We are an all-volunteer, non-profit organization (501(c)(3).

Our friends over at are holding a back to school drive for foster kids in Buncombe County!

The biggest need they have identified that are required for kiddos are over the ear headphones and earbuds – these have to be wired as schools do not accept wireless/ Bluetooth options. Additionally, lunch boxes are also a need.

Donations will be accepted from Wednesday, July 22 - Friday, July 31. If you would like to donate school supplies, you can drop them off in the collection boxes located at:

The Walnut Cove Members Association showed up in a big way for local families! 💙

Thanks to their incredible Donation Day, HARK delivered an SUV packed to the brim with requested items for the G.R.A.C.E. Center, including baby bouncers, a swing, feeding chairs, toys, games, five bicycles with helmets, and even a nearly new crib, mattress, bedding, and matching changing table.

The G.R.A.C.E. (Growing Relationships And Cultivating Engagement) Center provides a safe, welcoming space where children and families can spend time together during court-ordered supervised visits. With themed visitation rooms, a kitchen for shared meals, and laundry facilities that families can use during visits, the center helps create moments of connection, comfort, and normalcy for children navigating difficult circumstances.

Thank you to the Walnut Cove Members Association and everyone who donated. Your generosity is helping create brighter days and stronger family connections for children in our community. ❤️

If you didn’t hear, our first annual Play for the Kids event was a huge success!! Thank you to everyone who came out to play and purchased a raffle ticket! We raised over $10,000 for local kids in protective custody and those without stable housing!! 🎉💙
