On June 1, 1918, the battle of Belleau Wood began.

The Marines who fought there, cemented a legacy for generations to come. This was the first large-scale battle for the Marines and one that would be seared into the collective memory of the United States Marine Corps. The battle was fierce and raged for more than three weeks, finally coming to an end on June 26, 1918.

A captured German officer said the Marines fought like devils, calling them "teufel hunden." From that day on, Marines would be forever known as Devil Dogs.

As Commandant of the 1st Sgt. Burdett W. Loucks, Jr., Detachment 876, I offer my interpretation of what Memorial Day represents. It is a living promise. A promise that those who fell in defense of our nation will never be forgotten.

We don't just remember their deaths; we honor the life, freedom, and security their sacrifices secured for us all. Today, we stand in gratitude. Semper Fi. 🇺🇸

A friendly reminder: Please do not wish a veteran a Happy Memorial Day. Memorial Day is for remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Memorialize the lost or forgotten. To live in hearts and minds we leave behind is not to die. RIP

Hosted by the Marine Corps League Detachment 876 (Flagler County), this will be an evening of tradition, camaraderie, and honor.
