The phrase 'it takes a village' was exemplified at our annual Touch a Truck event. Despite the weather forcing us to end the event early on Saturday, it was still a huge success. We are extremely grateful for our community partners who consistently demonstrate their commitment to building strong partnerships. Your efforts are genuinely appreciated.

Yesterday, several of our members, along with members of Burgaw Police Department and numerous other Law Enforcement agencies, had the privilege of participating in the Pender County leg of the North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

This event allowed personnel to show support for the athletes competing in the games, and get a nice run in with Ainsley’s Angels!

This week, all of our C-Shift personnel, two Volunteers, and the Fire Chief had the opportunity to attend the 1st Due Operations Conference, hosted by 1st Due Tactics, in Carolina Beach. This conference is held locally, every year, but provides students with the opportunity to learn from and engage with some of the premiere instructors from across the country.

This year, our personnel had the opportunity to attend two days of lectures covering topics such as Engine Company operations, Incident Command during a Mayday situation, forcible entry techniques, establishing a culture that prioritizes the primary search, and many others.

On the third day, personnel attended hands-on training for Engine and Truck Company operations, as well as an additional presentation and work group on leadership. Engine Company operations focused on long line deployments and extending existing hose lines, which is often critical in rural environments where residences are found further from a roadway. Truck company operations focused on forcible entry skills and effective search techniques. Finally, the leadership presentation included “The 9L’s”, presented by Chief Corley Moore, and a work group that covered critical personnel management skills related to conflict resolution, as well as behavioral and conduct issues.

The week was busy and challenging, but it was worth it. Personnel returned more knowledgeable, better trained, and more prepared to serve the citizens of Burgaw, and Pender County. We are thankful for a Town Council and Administration who demonstrate their commitment to the health and safety of citizens by supporting attendance at such invaluable training, which enables us to achieve our mission effectively and efficiently.
