Join us at the Hampstead Branch Library tomorrow, Tuesday September 1, at 4:30 PM for a visit with author Bec Martin! Bec will share sea turtle stories from her books and there will also be an activity and a snack provided. This program is planned for ages 6-12.

The Smart Start Network is deeply saddened by the passing of Dolly Parton. Her belief that every child deserves access to books and the opportunity to develop a love of reading transformed the lives of countless children and families.

Through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, the Smart Start Network is honored to help bring free books and the joy of reading to children across North Carolina—helping families build connections, spark curiosity, and nurture a lifelong love of learning.

We will continue carrying forward her vision and remain committed to helping children build strong foundations for lifelong success. Her legacy will live on every time a child opens a book and discovers the joy of reading.

The library is partnering with the NC State Extension Master Gardener volunteers, Pender County for the Great Southeast Pollinator Census this year! You can pick up information to participate in the count at home or join us at both library branches on Saturday, August 22 from 10 AM-12 PM! We've also got some great books on pollinators for all ages!

The Great Southeast Pollinator Census is a six-state citizen-science count run by University of Georgia Extension. Each August, thousands of people watch a blooming plant for fifteen minutes and record the insects that visit. Together, those counts build a long-term picture of pollinator health across the Southeast. You can find out more information at gsepc.org!

Historians and community members that are interested in the history of Pender County owe a great thanks to one Martha Matilda Bloodworth. Known more familiarly as "Miss Mattie," she was a historian, author, and the first president of the Pender County Historical Society.

The collection at the Dallas Herring Library Annex includes, but is not limited to, a copy of her book "History of Pender County North Carolina," several news articles, and a copy of the address given by Clifton Moore at the unveiling of a portrait of "Miss Mattie" for the Grand Jury room of the county courthouse in 1959. Additionally, you'll find book plates in some of the collection noting that the item was purchased with funds from the sale of her book.

The Dallas Herring Library Annex is located at 108 S. Cowan Street in Burgaw (across the street from the Main Library) and is open 10-5 Thursday and Friday and 10-2 on Saturday, and available by appointment 10-5 Monday through Wednesday.
