Four Pender County 4-H youth and dedicated adult volunteer, Anndrea Carey-Baskett represented 4-H at the State 4-H booth at the NC State Fair. They spoke with fair goers about 4-H, handed out information fliers, engaged people with a fun 4-H trivia game, handed out swag and introduced 4-H alumni to the 4-H History Museum. They visited the 4-H Craft exhibits, went to Dorton Arena to see all the booths with NC made products, livestock shows and got to see the agriculture/horticulture displays and contest winners. Thank you for your commitment to 4-H!!

2027 4-H Coastal Plains Chicken Project!!!

Come join Pender County 4-H for the 2027 Coastal Plains Chicken Project. Registration and payment deadline is November 23rd, 2026. PLEASE MAKE PAYMENT TO THE PENDER COUNTY COOPERATIVE EXTENSION/4-H OFFICE, 801 S. WALKER ST BURGAW. MAKE CHECKS PAYABLE TO PENDER COUNTY EXTENSION/4-H OR YOU CAN PAY CASH.

This project is for ages 5-18 and you must be enrolled in 4HOnline, v2.4honline.com to participate. Each youth must purchase at least 2 chicks for $5 a piece. This year's breed will be the Golden-Laced Wyandotte. All first time participants are required to attend an orientation training on January 11th 2027, 5:30 pm-6:30 pm and all participants must attend a showmanship/project record book training on April 13th, 2027 5:30-6:30 pm hosted by Pender County 4-H. In order to show, each participant must turn in a Chicken Project Record Book prior to the show in April. The Chicken Show will be at the Lenoir County Livestock Arena on April 27, 2027.

The 4-H Sandhills Dairy Calf Project is in full swing! 14 Pender County 4-H youth are participating in this 8 week project learning about the dairy industry, nutrition, anatomy, dairy breeds, safety, dairy nutrition and showmanship skills. Last weekend, families got to tour the Kooba Dairy Farm and see a real working dairy farm. They saw how the Holsteins are milked, how crops are grown to feed the dairy cows, observed new calves and their care and even bottle fed young calves. Thanks to Kooba Dairy for loaning the project calves to Pender County 4-H.
The calves are housed at the Bottle Branch Farm in Burgaw. We want to thank Chris and Jackie Smith, owners of Bottle Branch Farm and their farm helper, Lynne Barnes for working so hard to feed and care for these calves. Also, Farm Bureau in Burgaw has made a generous donation to this meaningful community project. A very special thank you to Tom Herren, Agriculture Teacher/FFA at Pender High for volunteering to instruct youth on how to show their calves.
The Sandhills Dairy Calf show will be held at the Duplin County Livestock Arena in Kenansville on November 21st.

Pender County Teens will not want to miss this upcoming 4-H Teen Council meeting!! If you want to get your teen involved in a positive youth development program providing opportunities for community service, civic engagement, educational opportunities and networking, have them attend this meeting! We have 2 special guests and fun fall food craft planned. Ages 12-18 are invited to attend. This meeting is free.

WHAT A FUN WAY TO LEARN!!
Karrie Gonzalez, Pender County 4-H Program Assistant is in the process of teaching a 6 week 4-H STEM School Enrichment series at Malpass Corner Elementary. Youth in Ms. Miles' 21st Century Community Learning Center at Malpass Corner Elementary School listened to the story "Roll, Slope, and Slide: A Book About Ramps" by Michael Dahl as an introduction to how objects move, their speed, and what that has to do with energy. They discussed relevant vocabulary such as energy, speed, ramp, potential energy, and kinetic energy. Youth then brainstormed and sketched ideas for creating their own roller coaster focusing on the idea of ramps. Youth then worked in teams to create their own roller coasters to investigate and observe the speed and energy of a marble as it moved through their design.

To end National 4-H Week we want to give a shoutout to Phan Morrow, 4-H Volunteer Leaders Association Southeast District President and Pender County 4-H Teen Council Club Leader! Phan is a very dedicated volunteer for Pender County 4-H. She heads up District wide events, organizes and co-leads the Pender County 4-H Teen Council and helps fundraise throughout the year. We want to thank her for encouraging others to participate in 4-H project record books, Electric Congress, Presentations and 4-H Congress and continuing to recruit and train 4-H volunteers. She recently was awarded a scholarship to attend the National 4-H Volunteer Conference of Southern States and attended this event last week. Her commitment and support has greatly enriched and benefited Pender County 4-H!

Pender County 4-H lifetime member Jacob Farrow achieved an impressive record during his teen years with Pender County 4-H. Jacob needed help on his path to being accepted at NC State University, so he chose to participate in 4-H.
To begin his journey, he joined the Pender County 4-H Teen Council and became very involved in the community. He received many Teen Council Achievement Awards and participated in community service projects and 4-H Fundraising events. He attended multiple Teen Retreats and Winter Flings and was one of two teens in Pender County chosen to attend the NCSU Natural Resource Soil Conservation Camp. He participated in 4-H Presentations winning GOLD at the District and State levels and attended 4-H Congress three years in a row. He also spoke and gave instruction at a Pender County 4-H Presentations Workshop to guide youth into this project and did an electrical workshop at the 2026 Winter Fling. Jacob was chosen to attend the 2025 Youth Voice, turned in an award-winning Electric Project Record Book and earned the privilege of going to Electric Congress and participated in the Leader in Training program at Betsy Jeff-Penn 4-H Summer Camp. He headed up a 4-H Soda Can Lamp workshop for an Afterschool program and then decided to offer a 5 week 4-H electric workshop to teach youth about electricity, electrical motherboards and soldering. He planned, organized and implemented this phenomenal workshop. The participants of this workshop then constructed 4-H Soda Can Lamps. Jacob's goal for this workshop was intended to introduce local youth to electricity and create interest in 4-H Electric Congress. There was a record number of Pender County youth attending Electric Congress this summer due to Jacob's workshop. Over the years, Jacob has been a youth volunteer for Pender County 4-H STEM Summer Fun Days, Sphero Bot+ workshops in afterschool and Cyber Cyclones Robotics 4-H Club meetings. He held the office of 2025-2026 District Reporter, has over 1100 volunteer hours over the course of his education, was a member of Beta Club, National Honors Society, Phi Beta Kappa and was inducted in 4-H Honor Club at the 2026 4-H Congress. Jacob has now graduated from Pender Early College with Honors and is attending NC State University in the Chemical Engineering Department. He attributes his acceptance into the NCSU Chemical Engineering department to his involvement in 4-H and his implementation of the 5 week electric project for Pender County 4-H youth. Jacob has been an excellent role model for other 4-H members and continues to encourage their participation in 4-H.

Sinead Morrow is a remarkably accomplished scholar and community leader from Pender County, North Carolina. Graduating in May 2025, Sinead achieved the rare distinction of finishing at the absolute pinnacle of both her secondary and collegiate dual-enrollment cohorts. Recognized for her deep passion for veterinary sciences and her extensive service through 4-H, she represents the highest standards of academic discipline, civic leadership and youth excellence.
