4-H is one of the largest youth organizations in the United States with over 7 million participants, and claims approximately 240,000 in North Carolina alone. 4-H is best identified by its green four-leaf clover with an H on each leaf. The four H's on the emblem stand for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. 4-H is the only youth organization based at land-grant universities and the first experience many youth have with higher education.

The Pender County Bee Keepers Association, Pender County Master Gardeners and the Pender County Cooperative Extension Horticulture Agent taught Pender County 4-H youth all about Bees, Worms and Soil. Youth learned about the life of bees and how to care for them, they learned about soil science and health and even got to eat edible "dirt"! They learned about composting, vermicomposting and took home a plant to start a Pollinator home garden.

The Pender County 4-H partnered with Moore's Creek Battlefield National Park and the NC Wildlife Resource Commission for the first 4-H Moore's Creek Fishing Day! 17 youth learned how to cast a rod and reel, identify local fish species, put a worm on a hook, fix the rigging on a fishing line and enjoyed a fish craft and picnic in the park. Thank you Ranger Adam Credle for making this event possible! Great day fishing and we caught some BIG ones! 🐟

Come join us for Bees, Worms, and Soil Summer Fun Day on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 from 9 am - 3 pm. Meet a real-life beekeeper and discover the "Life of Bees". Learn about soil health from the Pender County Master Gardeners and enjoy some edible dirt. Get your hands dirty potting Black-eyed Susan and learn how you can become a worm farmer!

Open to youth ages 5-13. Agriculture Extension Auditorium, 801 S. Walker St., Burgaw. Cost is $15 per child; bring a bag lunch. Register now through 4-H Online. We hope to see you there!

Pender County 4-H Web Of Life Summer Fun Day was a hit! Youth participated in a Wildlife Career Critters activity, Liam Skelly, a 4-H youth volunteer did a presentation on Endangered Species, they watched a Return of the Wild livestream with biologists and played a wildlife scavenger hunt. They identified animal prints and furs, were introduced to live native carnivorous plants(Venus Fly Traps, Pitcher Plants...)presented by Shannon Fussell Davis owner of and learned about snakes of Southeast NC with Carole Town of Onslow County. They even got to pet a live snake!

The Mane Event Pender County 4-H Horse Club competed in their very first Southeast District Horse Show in Onslow County. Youth competed in Showmanship classes such as Rookie Hunter Showmanship, Rookie Western Showmanship, Rookie Ranch Ground Handling, Senior Pole Bending, Senior Barrels and Non-Trotting Equitation. Six contestants qualified to go to the State 4-H Horse Show at the NC State Fairgrounds July 8th-12th. Congratulations!!!!

2026 4-H Dairy Calf Project Info Night
Come enjoy some ice cream and find out all about the upcoming 4-H Dairy Calf Project June 8th, 6:00-7:00 pm at the Agriculture Extension building auditorium,
801 S. Walker St., Burgaw. We will only be getting 6 dairy calves again this year so spaces will be limited. This project is for ages 5-18. Contact Traci Spencer at [email protected] for further details about this event.

Pender County 4-H youth enjoyed the first Summer Fun Day event. They enjoyed camping overnight at Jones Lake State Park, swimming, hiking a trail, learning about the park's natural resources, roasting hotdogs and s'mores over a campfire and visiting the Aloha Safari Park where they got to pet giraffes, goats, learn all about primates and experience wild animals such as ostriches and zebras up close during a drive through safari. What a way to start off a great summer with 4-H!!

Fourteen Pender County 4-H youth came out to compete in the County Activity Day 4-H Presentations. Presentations were given on subjects such as All About Otters, Pokémon, King Henry I, History of the US Marine Corp, Coding, Welding and many other subjects. Thank you to judges Jennifer Hansen, Cindy McNally, Cindy Rivenbark, John Guganus and Melissa Massing for making this all possible! Youth will move on to compete in the 4-H District Activity Day Presentations at Mt Olive University on June 18th. Good luck to Pender County 4-H!!!
