Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, TX in 1865 to ensure all enslaved people were freed. Celebrated annually, Juneteenth commemorates the date that 250,000 enslaved Texans learned their freedom had been secured by the Emancipation Proclamation— two and a half years after it was signed. These enslaved people represented the last in the country to be told of their emancipation, giving Juneteenth its unique significance.
Juneteenth is a symbolic day celebrating the freedom of all Americans while emphasizing African American freedom, culture, and progress.
