Lead defensive tactics instructors from across Washington surprised Richard Petersen of WSCJTC’s Applied Skills Division with a special token of appreciation recognizing his leadership, dedication, and warrior spirit.

What does it really take to prepare new law enforcement officers for the realities of patrol work?

At WSCJTC, BLEA recruits train in high-pressure, reality-based scenarios designed to build communication, decision-making, de-escalation, and critical thinking skills before they ever enter the field. These immersive exercises help recruits apply classroom learning in situations that reflect the complexity of modern policing.

From domestic violence calls to mental health crises and rapidly evolving incidents, recruits are challenged to think critically, work as a team, and serve their communities with professionalism and accountability.

Go inside the training and see how Washington’s future officers are preparing for the job.
