Food Science Workshop – Spots Still Available!

Interested in baking, food preservation, nutrition, or learning the science behind the foods we eat? We still have openings for our Food Science Workshop on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the Winner 4-H Center!

We are excited to welcome Dr. Clifford Hall, Professor in the Dairy Science Department at South Dakota State University, who will be joining us to help teach this hands-on workshop alongside other SDSU Extension staff. Participants will have the opportunity to learn directly from university experts while exploring topics related to the Foods & Nutrition and Food Preservation project areas.

The State Fair Special Foods Committee is tickled pink to unveil a sizzling incentive for the 2026 State Fair Special Foods Contest! Thanks to Jared Namken, a Hamlin County 4-H parent and beef producer, along with the South Dakota Beef Industry Council, every 4-H member who jumps into the contest with a beefy recipe will snag a $50 prize. No need to worry about ribbon colors just whip up something beef-tastic, and the reward is yours!

What a great day at our youth gardening workshop with Tom and Peg Glover! The kids had the chance to tour, learn, and get their hands dirty planting tomatoes, potatoes, beans, melons, peppers, and onions. Everyone learned fun gardening skills and even got to take home seeds and plants to continue growing at home if they wanted as well! To top it all off, they also enjoyed some delicious jerky. Thank you, Tom and Peg, for sharing your knowledge, time, and love of gardening with our youth! On July 23rd the kids will be able to come back and see all the progress their plants have made.

On Tuesday, May 26th , our 4-H members had a great time practicing their roping, building confidence, and sharpening their skills for upcoming rodeos. Whether they were picking up a rope for the first time or getting in some extra practice, everyone learned something new and had a blast doing it! A huge THANK YOU to Tye Rozeboom and Clayton Gustad for taking the time to work with the kids and sharing their knowledge and encouragement. We appreciate your support for our young cowboys and cowgirls!
