Cumberland County Conservation District - Pollinator Workshop

Wanda J Gilbert CCCD DAS taught a “Pollinator” Workshop at the Soil Conservation office. Participants received: Pollinator Feeder/Waterers Kit; Bird Food; Bird Suet Bell; Hummingbird Feeder; Bird Feeders; Decorated Baskets; Packets of Flower Seeds and Be A Friend to Pollinators Brochure. Discussion and participation concerning Ways to Protect and Support Pollinators along with planning for future pollinator programs. This workshop was held in the Outdoor Education Classroom. The workshop was co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority.

Participants were: James Capps, Clay Capps, Ireland Tweedy, Jennifer Tweedy, Amelia Fochs; Cheri Fochs; Julie Capps and Donald Tweedy.

The Cumberland County Conservation District awarded three (3) High School Seniors from the Class of 2024 with a $750.00 scholarship each. The applications are judged by an independent person not associated with the Conservation District.

Cumberland County Conservation District – Outdoor Education Classroom
Wanda J Gilbert CCCD DAS worked with the Homeschool Students and Parents on the “Outdoor Education Classroom” at the Soil Conservation office. The parents provided assistance with the students on assembling the benches for the outdoor education classroom. Students designed the layout of the classroom. They have a covered area with tables, chairs and benches for educational classes and workshops. Plans are to add more items and hold more activities in the outdoor classroom throughout the year. The Outdoor Education Classroom is co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority.

Cumberland County Conservation District - Pollinator Garden

Wanda J Gilbert CCCD DAS worked with the Homeschool Students and Parents on the “Pollinator Garden” at the Soil Conservation office. The Pollinator Garden is an ongoing and growing project. The following phases are complete: Phase 1 – selecting a location; Phase 2 - planting pollinator plants; Phase 3 - adding Landscaping Timbers around the Pollinator Garden; Phase 4 - laying Geotextile (Filter Fabric) and Phase 5 - Spreading Mulch around the plants. In May; trimming, pruning, maintenance and additional plants was added to the garden along with benches, tables, raised beds, planters, bird bath, etc. for educational classes. Plans are to expand the garden more in Fall 2024. The Pollinator Garden is co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority.

Cumberland County Conservation District – Pollinator Garden Workshop

Wanda J Gilbert CCCD DAS worked with the Homeschool Students and Parents on the “Pollinator Garden” at the Soil Conservation office. Cumberland County Conservation District – Tree Planting Workshop

Wanda J Gilbert CCCD DAS taught a “Tree Planting” Workshop on November 27, 2023 at the Soil Conservation office. Participants received a 3 gallon “Eastern White Pine” Tree and Containerized Tree Planting Guidelines. Watched videos on Arbor Day – Planting a Container Tree and How to Properly Plant a Potted Tree. The winner of the door prize was: Clay Capps, he received a Tree Planting Spade. The workshop was co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority.

Cumberland County Conservation District – Agricultural Diversification Workshop

Wanda J Gilbert CCCD DAS taught an “Agricultural Diversification” Workshop on November 27, 2023 at the Soil Conservation office. Participants received a 1 gallon “Blueberry Plant, Blackberry Plant and Raspberry Plant’ along with 25 Strawberry Plants and a 7-page List of Alternative Crops and Enterprises for Small Farm Diversification from the US Department of Agriculture. Watched videos on What is Agricultural/Farm and Farms Food for Kids. Discussed how agricultural diversification helps all pollinators. The winner of the door prize was: Donald Tweedy Jr., he received a 2-mile Solar Fence Charger. The workshop was co-sponsored by Cumberland County Conservation District and Tennessee Valley Authority.

Cumberland County FFA Land Judging Team wins Regional Land Judging Contest. The team participated in the Regional Contest on October 19th in Pulaski County. Cumberland County placed 1st place with a score of 1044 points. Adair County was 2nd with 958 points. Karter Fletcher was High Individual and Josh Taylor was 2nd High Individual. The team will participate in the State Contest on November 8-9th in Hardinsburg, Ky. A special “Thank You” to Wanda J Gilbert CCCD DAS and Cumberland County Conservation District for sponsoring the Cumberland County FFA Land Judging Team.

Cumberland County Conservation District sponsored the local CCHS FFA Land Judging Team again this year. Each top four student were presented with a $25 check on October 11th.
