Burkeville Ruritan Club

Burkeville Ruritan Club We are a local organization dedicated to helping our community since October of 1938. WHAT IS RURITAN?

Ruritan National has nearly 30,000 members throughout the United States, that work to improve more than 1,100 local communities. Since the organization’s beginning in 1928, Ruritan Clubs have served America with Fellowship, Goodwill, and Community Service. Ruritan is a civic service organization made up of local clubs in urban areas, small towns and rural communities. Ruritan's purpose is to creat

e a better understanding among people and through volunteer community service, make America's communities better places in which to live and work. The slogan of Ruritan is "Fellowship, Goodwill and Community Service." Club membership represents a cross-section of the community in which the club serves, and is not restrictive with regard to occupation, social position, or any other specific criteria. Unlike most civic service organizations, Ruritan rarely has national programs. Rather, each club surveys its own community as to the needs of that community and then works to meet some of those needs. Nearly all clubs work locally with FFA, 4-H and other organizations serving youth. Nearly one in every three Ruritan clubs sponsors a Boy or Girl Scout unit. HISTORY

The first Ruritan Club was chartered May 21, 1928, in Holland, Virginia. Since that first club, Ruritan has grown throughout the United States of America, and in doing so, has become "America’s Leading Community Service Organization." Tom Downing of Suffolk, Virginia, and Jack Gwaltney of Holland, Virginia, are known as the co-founders of Ruritan. Gwaltney and Downing recognized the need for an organization where community leaders could meet and discuss ways to make their community a better place in which to live. The name "Ruritan" was suggested by Daisy Nurney, a reporter for the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot newspaper, and the club’s charter members unanimously adopted "Ruritan" as the organization’s name. The word is a combination of the Latin words for open country "ruri" and small town "tan," interpreted as pertaining to rural and small town life.

Burkeville Ruritan Club held its August meeting at Crewe Dine In on Monday evening August 11, 2025.
Our guest speaker, pictured above, Katie Martin Deer-Bear-Turkey Biologists with Department of Wildlife Resources of Virginia. Katie presented us with a very informative presentation on Bears in Nottoway County. She shared many interesting facts, Number of bears in Nottoway and surrounding counties total about 3500. The number of bears killed in Nottoway are 35 so far in 2025 and 45 in 2024. Bears are really not mean but very curious, and are similar to Big Raccoons can smell food miles away. They like to eat household trash, bird and sunflower seed and love corn from farmers fields. They usually mate early May or June each year and once their cubs are born, they keep them close by for several months and sort of “kick them out” at about 18 months old. Our members really enjoyed her presentation and hope she’ll visit us again in the future.

Rest in peace soldiers, warriors, members of the armed service who fought for our freedoms and never returned. God bless their souls and their family. We love in a free country but that has came at a price to mN family's . Family's of every race, gender, and creed. Alleviated for one purpose to protect us. God bless the ones who lost loved ones best friends, fathers and mothers. Thank you brave warriors. I'm proud of these brave men and women. Today when you have your cookouts praise God for these souls these people who never knew you but loved you enough to die for you. Only person I know who is better than these heros is Jesus Christ my lord and savior may he bless you all.

Looking for a few folks interested in becoming members. We have decided to try to grow in 2024. In order to grow we need community minded individuals.please consider coming to a meeting and seeing what we do. For many years we had many great events such as the Crewe chicken festival which was co hosted by other clubs. Over the years we have done various fundraisers and given many scholarships to deserving Nottoway county students as well as many donations to organizations like Christmas mother and the Alms House. If interested please reach out so we can plan for you to join us at the December meeting.
