COS Texas Urgent Call to Action!

Well, HD-58, our Convention of States Resolution made it out of committee yesterday by a 5-2 vote. This is a positive thing: to get out of a hostile committee and to a friendlier house floor for a full vote. However, there is a down side. HJR-39 was amended with small but very important language. The effect of this is that HJR-39 no longer matches the language of SJR2 and if it is not amended back to its original form, it will need to return to the senate for reconciliation, which will not happen this session.

So, this "poison pill" needs to be addressed. Representative Rick Miller is on the warpath after this amendment occurred without his knowledge. He has a heavy lift to contact the 80 co-sponsors and 10 pledged YES votes in order to educate them of the need for an amendment on the House floor returning the COS resolution back to the original language that matches SJR2 and then to vote yes on that amended bill. Watch the video below for more information.

In the meantime, email or call State Representative DeWayne Burns and thank him for his steadfast support of our Convention of States Resolution and ask him to contact Representative Rick Miller so he can be fully informed about what needs to happen on the floor of the Texas House.

Rep Burns phone: (512) 463-0538 and his email is : [email protected]

The Time is Now! Convention of States Texas!

We are still stuck in the House Committee but are hoping (for the Representative's sake!) that a committee vote happens on Thursday. If it clears committee, it looks certain to sail through the full floor vote.

CONVENTION OF STATES LONESTAR UPDATE

We are still waiting for SJR 2 to make it on the schedule before the House Committee. It seems the wheels of progress are turning especially slow in the Texas House of Representatives this session.

Lets all ask Representative Burns to put some more pressure on the process so we can get our resolution moving again! Please give his Austin office a call and ask them to see what they can do to grease the wheels!

Op-Ed: Texas Independence and the Convention of States

Our own Tamara Colbert with an OP-ED on Breitbart. It is obvious to anyone who will look that the federal government has no compunction, no desire to return to our founding principles. James Madison wrote of Col. George Mason's efforts during the amendments process debate saying that he believed: "it would be improper to require the consent of the Natl. Legislature, because they may abuse their power, and refuse their consent on that very account…”.

Well, here we are.

To quote John E. Lewis: “If not us, then who? If not now, then when?”

The seven most terrifying words were uttered by Steve Bannon at CPAC this week— “We are here to dismantle the administrative state.”

Texas experienced the first victory of the 2017 legislative session when the Senate State Affairs Committee voted to send the Convention of States resolution, SJR 2, on to the Senate floor for consideration by the entire chamber. Senate Committee on State Affairs - Feb 16th, 2017

Good news from Austin today. The Senate took the first step down the road towards success for our Article V resolution. After a 3 hour hearing, it passed the committee by a 6-1 vote with two Senators absent. The debate was overly positive though there were about nine opponents present for testimony, though the complaints were largely boilerplate. Concerns from some Senators about tightening up the controls on potential delegates, which is probably not a bad idea....though, just not too tight!

Here is the link to the hearing archived on the Senate site. Next stop, the full senate floor!

Legislative update: This week I've asked the Senate State Affairs committee to hear Senate Bill 21 – the Convention of States legislation by Senator Brian Birdwell, R-Granbury. This is one of Governor Greg Abbott's emergency items and one of my top priorities for this legislative session.

States to feds: Come and take it!

This is, quite simply, one of the finest columns I've read on this subject. From quoting Washington's farewell address to "we must use the cannon to defend the cannon", Ms Dunaway captures both the spirit and the scope of this fight.

A lot of questions have been asked recently about the propriety of contacting legislators in states not our own. I firmly believe this is a national struggle that is being waged at the local levels. What happens to the COS resolution in South Dakota and Arizona effects those in Texas and Arkansas. The "cannon" Ms Dunaway writes about is a national weapon that can only be fired if 24 states pull the lanyard. All of us on that lanyard have a vested interest in helping others in the ways of "lanyard pulling".

“It is seldom that liberty of any kind is lost all at once. Slavery has so frightful an aspect to men accustomed to freedom that it must steal in upon them by degrees and must disguise itself in a thousand shapes in order to be received.” – David Hume By degrees, and in a thousand […]

Mark Levin, Mark Meckler expose fear-mongering fringe groups in South Dakota

Mark Meckler was on Mark Levin's show yesterday talking about Article V generally and the fight in the South Dakota legislature specifically. It shows that this fight is a national one. For sure, each battle is occurring in individual states, but their decisions effect us all. In the end, we are all in this as one.

An interesting note that one legilsator in SD believes that President Trump will fix it all. Even if we concede this as true, what does it hurt to pursue both an Article V solution AND the Trump-fixes-it-all unicorn? Can they not be pursued in concert with one another? The answer is obviously "yes!".

Several fringe groups, including organizations funded by George Soros, have turned their guns on Convention of States. Help us fight back. Respectfully ask y...

Abbott Promotes Conservative Reforms in State of the State Address - Empower Texans

Governor Abbott gave his State of the State Address this past Tuesday to a raucus gallery full of COS Action Texas grassroots activists. During his address, he continued to stand athwart our over-reaching federal government by identifying the need for an Article V Convention of States as an emergency item for the upcoming session.

While no guarantee that action will occur, by identifying it as such, the Governor has cleared the way for a votes on HJR 39 and SJR 2 before the 60 day mark of the session. Normally, no votes can be held prior to this mark during the 140 day session. By doing this, Governor Abbott has once again signaled his unwavering support to use the Constitution to fix the Constitution.

Abbott also notably sided with Patrick and the Texas Senate on a number of issues.
