Port of Skagit

Port of Skagit "Good Jobs for Our Community"- Port of Skagit mission statement.

Governed by an elected board of three commissioners, The Port of Skagit serves as an economic development engine for Skagit County by concentrating on our mission, Good Jobs for Our Community. At the same time, we take care to provide transparent governance and excellent public service at minimal cost to the taxpayers in our district. Conveniently located in Northwest Washington’s fertile Skagit (

pronounced Skaa-Jit) Valley, found midway between the metropolitan areas of Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, British Columbia, the Port of Skagit owns and operates three key facilities: the Skagit Regional Airport, the Bayview Business Park and the La Conner Marina. Combined, the port’s three facilities are home to more than 80 businesses that employ some 1,100 workers in sustainable household wage jobs, and we still have plenty of room to grow. Local voters approved the creation of the Port of Skagit in 1964, realizing the need for an entity that would serve the economic needs of Skagit County by helping to create jobs in the natural resource fields of agriculture, wood products, fisheries and mineral extraction. Our focus has broadened over the years, and today the port’s essential purpose is to contribute to the economic vitality of Skagit County through the development of facilities and infrastructure that support local commerce, trade and tourism. We are guided by our promise:

We promise excellence in public service and leadership within a business landscape that inspires success and enhances the quality of life in Skagit County. Your Port of Skagit also seeks to be a responsible steward of the properties we control, because we recognize that protecting the environment contributes greatly to the fine quality of life we enjoy in the Skagit Valley. The Skagit Valley has it all -- great location, natural beauty, friendly people and a port district that is working hard to build and maintain a strong economy. Please take a look around our web site and see all the things your Port of Skagit is doing to create Good Jobs for Our Community.

On the final day of Women’s History Month, we recognize a trailblazer in our organization, Port of Skagit District 2 Commissioner Melanie Mankamyer. Commissioner Mankamyer was appointed to the Port of Skagit Commission in 2024 and then successfully ran for the elected office in 2025. She is the first woman to serve as a Port of Skagit Commissioner in our Port’s 62-year history.
Commissioner Mankamyer brings her nearly 30 years of experience as a Civil Engineer to her position on the Port Commission. The variety of projects and clients she managed during her career has prepared her to take on the work of a Port Commissioner with an experienced and thoughtful approach.
The Port is pleased to recognize and thank Commissioner Mankamyer for her dedication to public service, and her steady governance on the Port of Skagit Commission.

The team of staff from the Port of Skagit planted 190 native trees and shrubs along new trails at the SWIFT Center.

The plantings were added to the new Winfield and Quarry Trails at the SWIFT Center. Port staff from Skagit Regional Airport, La Conner Marina, SWIFT Center, and the Administrative Office planted nearly 200 trees and shrubs, ranging from Western Red Cedar and Big Leaf Maple, to Oceanspray and Red Flowering Currant, with a coordinated plan to place more flowering shrubs near benches and viewpoints for trail users to enjoy.

The planting work party was a team effort that provided additional labor to the project as well as a great team-building opportunity for Port staff. This event also provided a head start on plantings in the high-profile areas of the new trail system before the larger scale riparian restoration work begins in 2027 with the support of a Washington State Department of Ecology grant, in partnership with Skagit County.

The Port of Skagit has a long history of environmental stewardship work, including the responsible management of wetlands and forested lands, and creating 10+ miles of nature trails, in lieu of curbs and sidewalks, during the development of Bayview Business Park in Burlington, to better complement and support the natural landscape of the forested business park.

The Port is honored to be a part of this event and this project!
