Burlington Public Library Social Media Policy
For the purpose of this policy, social media means any web application, site or account created and maintained by Burlington Public Library (BPL) that allows library staff and patrons to share opinions and information about library-related materials and activities. Social media furthers our mission to connect library users and community residents to t
he world of ideas. The goals of BPL-sponsored social networking sites are:
• to inform the public about library resources and activities
• to increase the public’s use of library resources
• to provide additional interaction with the public and reach a broader audience. What users should know
Burlington Public Library reserves the right to edit or modify any postings or comments for space or content, while retaining the intent of the original post. BPL reserves the right to modify or remove any messages or postings that include the following, but are not limited to:
• Offensive language or hate speech
• Personal attacks or insults
• Potentially libelous material
• Plagiarized material
• Private or personal information published without consent
• Hyperlinks to material not directly related
• Language deemed to be abusive or defamatory
• Violation of copyright, trademark right, or other intellectual property rights
• Posts considered to be spam or commercial in nature
• Posts considered to be off-topic or political organizing. Users should be aware that third party websites have their own privacy policies. The Library reserves the right to approve or deny “friends” and to block those who consistently post inappropriate content. Participation in the Burlington Public Library social networking services implies agreement with all Library policies.
