Yesterday, UVM Police Services Chief Jim Phelps and Deputy Chief Jay Lawson participated in a Green Dot Bystander Intervention training at UVM.

We’re grateful to the UVM Center for Health & Wellbeing and the Green Dot Steering Committee for hosting and leading this important initiative.

Green Dot is all about recognizing when something isn’t right and knowing how to step in safely. Programs like this help build a campus where students, families, staff, and community members all play a role in looking out for one another.

UVM Police Services is proud to be part of that effort.

During National Police Week, we pause to honor the officers who have died in the line of duty and recognize the sacrifice behind the badge.

The annual Candlelight Vigil is a powerful reminder of their service and the responsibility we carry forward.

At UVM Police Services, we are committed to serving our community with integrity and respect, honoring their legacy through the work we do every day.

Today’s encouragement comes from Rachel - a familiar name & face for anyone who’s had their fingerprints taken with UVM Police Services.

“When the pressure builds, coming back to the present can make all the difference. The 5‑4‑3‑2‑1 grounding exercise helped me through some of my hardest semesters.”

Some days are harder than others—and that’s okay.

You already have the strength to get through it.

Every step forward counts, even the small ones.

We’re here to support you - on the good days and the tough ones. 💚💛

A little real-talk encouragement from Elizabeth might be exactly what you need right now 💛

She may see herself as the expert here, but honestly… her advice is spot on 💚

UVM Chief of Police Jim Phelps challenged our department to think back on advice we were given as students, or strategies we leaned on, to get through finals. Throughout this week we will be sharing those reflections.

We begin this week with Chief Phelps' own thoughts.

As the year wraps up, I want to say thank you to our three student employees, Elise, Heidi, and Isabella, for everything they have done this year.

This was the first time we created these positions, and you knocked it out of the park. You jumped in, helped wherever needed, and made a real difference for our staff. Having you here made our department run more smoothly, and your willingness to pitch in did not go unnoticed.

From day one, you were not just extra help. You became part of our Police Services family. Starting something new always comes with some unknowns, but you showed just how valuable these roles can be and set a strong standard moving forward.

Thanks again for a great year, and best of luck as you take the next steps ahead.

Sincerely, Chief Jim Phelps

🔥 No Outside Fires on Campus 🔥

UVM Police Services has responded to several recent fires set in wooded areas near Virtue Field, WDW, MSH, and Redstone. These fires put people, property, and our surrounding neighborhoods at serious risk.

Please remember:
🚫 Outside fires are prohibited on all UVM campuses and in the City of Burlington
🔥 Vermont is currently under a High Fire Danger Forecast
🌲 Dry conditions mean fires can spread quickly and unpredictably
🏠 Smoke and fire can harm people, university property, and community members

For everyone’s safety, do not start or participate in outside fires under any circumstances.

If you have questions or concerns, contact UVM Police Services at (802) 656-3473.

Help us keep our campus and community safe. 💚💛

Today, as part, of our week-long celebration, we recognize UVM Police Services Dispatcher - Courtney!

What’s your favorite part of working in dispatch?

My favorite part of working in dispatch is the people and getting to learn the law-enforcement side of first responding. As an AEMT, I work with law enforcement in the field a lot so it's been fun to see it from both sides.

What’s a myth about dispatch you wish people understood?

A myth about dispatch is that we just answer phones. We do a lot of the behind-the-scenes work when the officers are calls such as running licenses, monitoring camera footage, and finding other information officers may need for their investigations.

What is your favorite snack to have during a shift?

My favorite shift snack is anything with chocolate.

Favorite local Burlington spot?

My favorite Burlington spot is The Daily Planet.
