It’s amazing how much you see when you slow down and look closely. Today during our nature journaling event, we found these structures created by caterpillars to protect them while they pupate (we think). All of these were on largeflower bellwort leaves. Please let us know if you know what species it is! And join us for our next nature journaling session on May 27th! Rockpointvt.org/calendar to register.

Sunday, May 24th from 10-11:30. Come learn about butterflies with local naturalist & author Kate Taylor!

Butterflies are amazing animals, morphing from leaf-bound caterpillars to winged beauties. New England has over 120 species of butterflies, yet most of us only recognize one or two of the most common. In this talk we’ll begin changing that. First we'll explore the life cycle of butterflies, then discuss ways to find and identify them in the field.

Kate Taylor is the author of Butterflies of Vermont and their Host Plants and is a graduate of the Vermont Master Naturalist Program.

Join us this Saturday, May 16th from 10am-1pm for a workshop in invasive species management! Tending Rock Point is a series of workshops where we practice collaborative stewardship and reciprocity with the land at Rock Point. In this session we will take a tour through some sites where we are managing populations of what are commonly called "invasive" species. These are species that have been brought here recently by humans and have the capacity disrupt ecosystems by reproducing rapidly and out-competing native species. We will meet some of these species and learn how to identify them, we'll discuss our philosophy of management, and then choose an area to work on together for the remainder of our time. For more info & to register, visit rockpointvt.org/calendar.

Join us for monthly walks focused on observing the insect pollinators of Rock Point.
These are like bird walks-- but for insects! Bring your insect nets, cameras, binoculars, or even just your smart phone. We'll explore various natural communities around Rock Point and look closely at their insect inhabitants, with a special focus on pollinators. We'll document what we see and submit observations to community science efforts such as VCE's Vermont Butterfly Atlas and Pollinator Interactions on Plants project.

The first walk will take place on Saturday, May 16th, from 10:30am-12:30pm. Find out more & register at rockpointvt.org/calendar

Join us this Saturday, May 9th from 10am-1pm for a workshop in perennial planting & propagation!

Tending Rock Point is a series of workshops where we practice collaborative stewardship and reciprocity with the land at Rock Point. In this session we will take a tour of some sites where we are propagating native species and planting orchard trees. We'll talk about restoration methods and strategies we've been implementing over the past few years, and then spend time working together to plant trees and propagate native plants. For more info and to register, visit rockpointvt.org/calendar.
