Scam alert
A local resident recently received a text message claiming their debit card had been compromised and instructing them to call a phone number for assistance. The person who answered falsely identified themselves as a representative of a financial services company and convinced the victim to provide personal information, including a Social Security number, date of birth, address, and credit card information.
Fortunately, the victim became suspicious of the phone call and contacted their bank, secured their accounts, and no financial loss was reported.
“Never provide your Social Security number, debit card number, or credit card information to someone who contacts you unexpectedly,” said Police Chief Mike Roney. “If you receive a text or call claiming to be from your bank or card provider, do not use the phone number provided in the message. Instead, call the number listed on the back of your card or on the institution's official website.”
Chief Roney also reminds the public if you believe you may have been targeted by a scam, contact your financial institution immediately and report the incident to the Burlington Police Department at (620) 364-8757.
