Scam alert

A local resident recently received a text message claiming their debit card had been compromised and instructing them to call a phone number for assistance. The person who answered falsely identified themselves as a representative of a financial services company and convinced the victim to provide personal information, including a Social Security number, date of birth, address, and credit card information.

Fortunately, the victim became suspicious of the phone call and contacted their bank, secured their accounts, and no financial loss was reported.

“Never provide your Social Security number, debit card number, or credit card information to someone who contacts you unexpectedly,” said Police Chief Mike Roney. “If you receive a text or call claiming to be from your bank or card provider, do not use the phone number provided in the message. Instead, call the number listed on the back of your card or on the institution's official website.”

Chief Roney also reminds the public if you believe you may have been targeted by a scam, contact your financial institution immediately and report the incident to the Burlington Police Department at (620) 364-8757.

Please share this post to help protect friends and family from becoming victims of similar scams.

Come hungry, leave smarter

Join Burlington Police Chief Mike Roney at noon on Friday, June 5, at the Gridley Senior Center, 307 Main Street, Gridley, for an informative presentation on scams and fraud prevention. This free event will also be a potluck lunch, so bring your favorite dish to share and enjoy an afternoon of food, fellowship, and valuable information.

Unfortunately, local residents are falling victim to scams in record numbers. From fake phone calls and text messages to online fraud and financial schemes, today’s scammers are becoming more convincing every day. Many people think, “That could never happen to me” — right up until someone claiming to be from the IRS, Amazon, Publishers Clearing House, or even a “long-lost relative” asks for gift cards and immediate payment.

Chief Roney will discuss common types of scams, the warning signs to watch for, and practical ways to protect yourself and your family. He’ll share helpful tips, real-life examples, and simple steps that can keep you from becoming the next target.

This is important information for everyone — because scammers don’t care how smart, careful, or experienced you are. They only care if you answer the phone.

So save the date and come learn how to stay one step ahead, enjoy a great meal, and spend time with friends and neighbors. Everyone is welcome.

School is out, summer is here, and the outdoor swimming pool is calling everyone’s name!

With more kids, bikes, walkers, and flip-flops around the outdoor swimming pool, the Burlington Police Department would like to remind everyone that the speed limit is 20 mph on Niagara Street between 12th and 13th Streets, and along 13th Street from Niagara to Neosho Streets.

We know everyone is excited to get to the pool, but there’s no need to set a land-speed record getting there. Please slow down, stay alert, and keep an eye out for children crossing the streets and heading to summer fun.

Our goal is simple: safe kids, safe drivers, and a summer full of cannonballs — not close calls.

Thanks for helping keep Burlington safe and enjoyable for everyone this summer!
