CITY OF BURLINGTON-CRITICAL INCIDENT 300 BLOCK OF LEWIS STREET
On August 29, 2026, at 10:22 AM, the City of Burlington Police Department and the Racine County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the 300 block of Lewis Street for the report of an assault in progress. On arrival officers found that a female and male had gotten into a physical altercation inside the home. The female victim was able to leave the residence prior to officers’ arrival and was later taken to the Aurora Medical Center in Burlington for injuries sustained in that assault.

The 43-year-old suspect remained inside the residence and had made statements to the victim that he intended on committing su***de and had access to fi****ms. Out of an abundance of caution, and for the safety of our community, a shelter in place alert was put into effect while law enforcement continued to communicate with the suspect who had barricaded himself inside the residence. Due to the nature of the incident and concern for public safety, the Burlington Police Department requested assistance from the Racine County Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team.

Crisis negotiators from the sheriff’s office were utilized to continue messaging with the suspect while he was inside the residence offering him resources and attempting to gain compliance to surrender to law enforcement. After all efforts were exhausted and law enforcement was no longer able to communicate with the suspect, the SWAT team deployed technology to systematically clear the residence where the suspect was found inside deceased.

We would like to extend our gratitude to members of the Racine County Communications Center, Racine County Sheriff’s Department, and the City of Burlington Fire Department for their assistance during the incident. We would also like to thank our community for their patience during this incident. The safety and well‐being of our community members are our top priority during these incidents. We want to assure the public there is no threat to the surrounding area.

No information will be released on the suspect until next of kin can be notified. This investigation is ongoing and no further information will be released at this time.

Please read the following if you would like other options to receive services if you do not want or cannot utilize the stairs, as we do not have an elevator. If you wish to see us in person and require accessibility, please ring the intercom by our new front door so we can assist. We hope to see you soon!
