Today, Support Staff United and Vermont Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals introduced proposals in contract bargaining that would make our hospitals and communities safer for everyone who wants to call Vermont home.
We were proud to stand with Migrant Justice and SEIU CIR to call on UVM Medical Center to create greater protections for all employees and patients, and to join the Milk with Dignity program so all milk purchased by the hospital comes from farms where basic human rights are protected. As we say in the labor movement, an injury to one is an injury to all! It is unacceptable to see dramatic cuts to frontline university staff positions and wages while administrative positions have ballooned at Vermont State University. We stand in solidarity with our and Vermont State Employees' Association's Union members who are raising the alarm about administrative bloat.

"Data compiled via public records requests and shared in the letter shows that more than 180 full-time staff and faculty positions have been cut since 2019. But while faculty positions have decreased, “the number of non-bargaining-unit managerial positions has continued to grow, and their compensation increased,” the letter reads.

Full-time administrative positions increased by 41% since 2019. Vermont State University now has 180 full-time faculty and 131 administrators, the labor leaders wrote."

Three years after Vermont State University's merger, staff and faculty say they've "borne the brunt" of financial cuts while administrative positions and salaries have increased.
