From the Office of Sheriff Kevin Glendening:

On September 1, 2026, at approximately 1:54p.m., Des Moines County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a vehicle for a turning violation at Division St. and Central Ave. Deputies made contact with the driver and she was identified as Michelle Lea Hughes, age 44, of Fairfield, IA. A driver’s license check showed Hughes is suspended.

While speaking with Hughes, deputies smelled the odor of ma*****na coming from the vehicle. Deputies conducted a search of the vehicle and located a piece of foil containing he**in, several pieces of foil with he**in residue inside of them, and a drug pipe with he**in residue inside of it. Hughes was then placed under arrest for a turning at intersection violation, driving under suspension, possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Hughes was transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center.

A CRIMINAL CHARGE IS MERELY AN ACCUSATION AND THE DEFENDANT IS PRESUMED INNOCENT UNTIL AND UNLESS PROVEN GUILTY.

From the Office of Sheriff Kevin Glendening:

On August 26, 2026, at approximately 8:44a.m. Des Moines County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a vehicle for speeding at US Highway 34 and Main St. in Burlington, IA. While speaking with the driver, deputies smelled the odor of ma*****na coming from the vehicle. The driver advised deputies she had ma*****na and handed over a bag that contained approximately a quarter pound of ma*****na. The driver advised deputies she was delivering the ma*****na to a friend.

The driver was identified as Letticia Anne Carruthers, age 38, of New London, IA. Carruthers was placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and fail to affix a drug tax stamp. She was transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center.

From the Office of Sheriff Kevin Glendening:

On July 26, 2026, at approximately 1:41p.m., Des Moines County Sheriff’s Deputies located an individual at 11912 DMC Highway 99 who had an outstanding arrest warrant. The individual was identified as John Darrell Moyes Jr., age 44, of Burlington, IA.

Moyes warrant was confirmed and he was placed under arrest. Deputies then searched Moyes prior to transporting him and located methamphetamine on his person. Moyes was transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center and charged with possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense.

On July 18, 2026, at approximately 11:10p.m., Des Moines County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a vehicle at S. 9th St. and Division St. for a stop sign violation. Deputies identified the driver as Terra Lynn Webb, age 49, of West Burlington, IA. Webb advised deputies she had ma*****na inside the vehicle.

Deputies searched the vehicle and located a glass jar containing ma*****na. Webb was placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense. She was transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center.

Speed not only affects your safety, but all of the people on the road around you.
Here are some tips for encountering speeders on the road:
If you are in the left lane and someone wants to pass, move over and let them by.
Give speeding drivers plenty of space.
Adjust your driving accordingly; speeding can be tied to aggressive driving. If someone is tailgating you or trying to engage you in risky driving, use judgement to safely steer your vehicle out of the way.
Call the police if you believe a driver is following or harassing you.

From the Office of Sheriff Kevin Glendening:

On July 13, 2026, at approximately 12:37a.m., Des Moines County Sheriff’s Deputies stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation at Beaverdale Rd. and Washington Rd. During the traffic stop a Deputy K-9 Unit conducted an open-air sniff around the vehicle resulting in a positive alert to the odor of narcotics.

Deputies searched the vehicle and located ma*****na and drug paraphernalia on the passenger side of the vehicle. The front seat passenger in the vehicle advised deputies all of the ma*****na located on the passenger side of the vehicle was his. He also produced a drug pipe from his pants that had methamphetamine residue on it. He was identified as Erin Shawn Smith, age 51, of Burlington, IA.

Deputies also located a pill bottle on the driver’s side floorboard with methamphetamine inside of it. The pill bottle had the driver’s name on it. The driver was identified as David Luster Ackers, age 64, of Cedar Rapids, IA.

Smith and Ackers were both placed under arrest and transported to the Des Moines County Correctional Center. Smith was charged with possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense and possession of drug paraphernalia. Ackers was charged with possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offence.
