Grimes Elementary School in Burlington, Iowa educates 300 students in grades K through 4th. The school is named after Iowa's third Governor and United States Senator, James Wilson Grimes. While serving as Senator, Grimes broke party ranks when he cast a vote for acquittal during the impeachment trials of President Andrew Johnson. After serving as Senator, Grimes returned to his home site, fell int

o ill health and passed away. The school is located on his original home site. Several schools were constructed on the site and later remodeled. The beautiful building we have now was completed in 2005 as part of the Burlington Community School Districts "Newer and Fewer" plan. The building has some remarkable features including a large, colorful foyer; an enormous gymnasium; a large cafeteria; a media center with lots of sunlight filtering through the windows above; and classrooms equipped with sinks, water fountains, bathrooms, and smart boards. The true splendor of the school however is not in the wonderful design or technology, but rather in the integrity, character and skill of its staff. Grimes school is home to over 60 employees all sharing the common goal of providing students with the skills, the resources and the high expectations necessary to become lifelong learners.

Football season is here!! Parents, please be aware of the new Athletic Event Attendance Policies.

Know before you go: Important information about student athletic event attendance

The first day of the 2026-27 school year is just around the corner, and so is the start of fall sports. Please take a moment to review our updated athletic attendance policy with your student so we can continue to ensure a safe, respectful and well-supervised environment for all attendees at school-sponsored athletic events.

SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS: Students in grades K–6 will not be admitted without a parent or guardian present and are not permitted to attend unsupervised.

Grades K-4: Students in kindergarten through 4th grade must be accompanied and directly supervised by a parent or guardian at all times while attending athletic events.

Grades 5 and 6: Fifth- and sixth-graders must be accompanied and directly supervised by a parent or guardian at all times while attending athletic events unless they are sitting in their designated section.

STUDENT IDENTIFICATION: Students in grades 7-12 must present a valid student ID for entry into athletic events.

Acceptable forms of identification include a current physical school-issued ID or digital student ID.

Students who are unable to provide identification may be denied entry.

STUDENT LOCATION

Students in grades 7-12 must remain in their section for the entirety of the game, using the restrooms in concessions in closest proximity to their section.

Elementary, intermediate and middle school students must use the upper level restrooms and concessions.

High school students must use the concessions and restrooms next to the endzone.

BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS: All students are expected to demonstrate appropriate behavior aligned with school expectations, including respect for others, adherence to school rules, and compliance with staff directions.

REMOVAL & CONSEQUENCES: Any student removed from an athletic event due to inappropriate behavior, rule violations, or failure to follow staff directives will be subject to the following consequence:

Immediate suspension from attending all school-sponsored athletic events and activities for the remainder of the current season.

*School administration and event supervisors reserve the right to enforce this policy to maintain a safe and positive environment for all participants and spectators.

We kicked off the school year the best way we know how—with leadership, laughter, and a little dancing! 🎉

Our Welcome Back Assembly included a review of our assembly expectations, followed by some awesome 4th graders helping us review the 7 Habits of Leader in Me by acting out different scenarios! 🌟

Then, Mr. Cradic took on the ultimate leadership challenge: putting on a sweatshirt while keeping a balloon in the air. 🎈😂 It definitely took some focus, persistence, and a few leadership skills!

And because no Leader in Me assembly is complete without it… we wrapped things up with a dance party to our favorite Leader in Me song! 🎶

We’re ready for a great year of learning, leading, and growing together.

Every Student. Every Day. 💜🐾
