Here is my statement on the recent domestic violence incident that has deeply affected our community.

Today, I signed an Executive Order supporting our immigrant community and the sensitive locations that are so crucial to our City.

Act 150, signed into law this past summer, prohibits civil arrests, including civil immigration arrests, in sensitive locations. Executive Order 2026-2 describes how Burlington will implement Vermont’s Act 150.

Everyone in our community deserves to feel safe, especially in sensitive locations such as hospitals, schools, and places of worship. I was so grateful to be joined today by brave community partners who are on the front lines supporting our immigrant community members.

I was joined today by hardworking City Staff to deliver updates on the City's Housing Strategy.

The city has long been a leader in making housing a public responsibility
and a public good, and it’s time to reinvigorate that legacy with a bold vision for bringing housing back to the people!

This is about more than hitting our housing numbers – it’s about reimagining what affordable, sustainable, and thriving
communities look like, and activating our city in new ways to get us there.

Here is my statement on today's verdict in the State v. Jason Eaton case.

Thank you to the jury for their service and I commend the Burlington Police Department and Chittenden County State’s Attorney’s Office for their thorough investigation and prosecution.

My heart is with Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Aliahmad, and Kinnan Abdalhamid and their loved ones.

I want to take a moment to recognize the two union contracts I was proud to sign this summer with both the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 1343 and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 300, representing close to 400 employees across the City of Burlington.

Thank you to the IBEW Local 300 and AFSCME Local 1343 bargaining teams for their collaborative and respectful approach to negotiations and to the City’s bargaining team that matched that productive spirit.

A City government is only as good as the people who work for it, and I am grateful to the hardworking members of all our City unions who make this City run every day.

My administration is dedicated to union contracts that reflect a strong commitment to fair bargaining and a City government that prioritizes its staff, even during consistently difficult budget years.

I look forward to continuing to build strong working partnerships with representatives from AFSCME Council 93, BPOA- FOP Lodge 21, Burlington Firefighters L3044, IBEW local 300, and the Burlington Police Sergeants Association.

My administration is committed to making sure our public spaces are accessible and safe for everyone in our community. That's why we've reconvened the Hot Spots Working Group.

Hot Spots is an interdepartmental working group with representatives from Fletcher Free Library, Burlington Police Department, Burlington Fire Department, CEDO, Burlington Parks, Recreation & Waterfront (BPRW), Burlington Public Works, the City Attorney's Office, Chittenden County Community Justice Center, Permitting and Inspections, and the Mayor’s Office. The group works collaboratively to explore quick, practical strategies to help ease pressure in several "hot spots" around the City.

Right now, their main focus is City Hall Park and I'm excited to share what the City is doing as a result of Hot Spots to make our public spaces welcoming for everyone in the City!

The challenges Burlington faces cannot be solved by one municipality alone. It requires cooperation within our City and with partners at the state level.

Last Monday, the Burlington City Council passed a bipartisan resolution that identified the ways we need stronger and more tangible partnership with the state, like support in identifying a location for a new 100-bed shelter for our unhoused neighbors.

I'd like to thank our Councilors for working with my administration and for collaborating across party lines to support this resolution.

My team is working with the Governor's Office to set up a meeting to discuss the ideas in this resolution and to explore how we can strengthen our partnership to make Burlington healthier and safer for everyone.

Thank you to all the faculty, staff, and school leaders who prepared our school buildings, classrooms, and school communities to be ready for today. Also thank you to our amazing Burlington Public Works crossing guard team and Green Mountain Transit partners for getting kids safely to all of our schools. 🎉
