🚧 RAILROAD CROSSING CONSTRUCTION UPDATE 🚧

Norfolk Southern and the North Carolina Railroad Company are continuing rail replacement work through the region. As this project progresses, temporary road closures at railroad crossings will occur throughout Alamance County from East to West.

Residents and motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and use alternate routes when crossings are closed. Detour signs will be in place per the contractor.

• Do not drive around barricades or attempt to cross a closed railroad crossing.

📢 Attention Elon Community: Upcoming Rail Crossing Closures

Rail replacement work is planned for rail crossings in Elon as part of the Carolinian and Piedmont Passenger and Freight Improvements (CAPPFI) project.

🚧 Temporary rail crossing closures will be necessary. The project is currently underway in Mebane and is expected to work its way toward Elon over the next few weeks.

While we do not yet have a confirmed start date for closures in Elon, we are sharing this information in advance to help residents and motorists plan ahead. Updates will be posted on the Town’s official social media pages and website as soon as they are available.

Affected crossings include:

-Williamson Avenue
-Oak Avenue
-Gilliam Road
-York Road

🚧 Norfolk Southern Rail Work Update

Norfolk Southern rail replacement work continues in Mebane.

As of Thursday, August 27:

✅ Redman Road railroad crossing is completed and open
✅ Buckhorn Road railroad crossing is completed and open
🚧 Mattress Factory Road crossing remains under construction

Fifth Street, Fourth Street, and Third Street remain open.

Motorists should continue to follow posted detours, use caution near work zones, and allow extra travel time.

🌀 Hurricane Season Is Approaching Its Peak — Now Is the Time to Prepare!

As we move into late August and September, North Carolina is entering the most active portion of Atlantic hurricane season. While coastal communities often experience the greatest impacts, tropical systems can also bring heavy rainfall, flash flooding, damaging winds, tornadoes, and power outages well inland.

Take a few minutes now to make sure you and your family are ready:

🔋 Build or refresh your emergency kit — Include water, nonperishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, chargers, and other essentials for several days.

📱 Have multiple ways to receive warnings — Keep Wireless Emergency Alerts enabled and have a reliable weather radio or trusted weather app.

🏠 Prepare your home — Secure outdoor items, check drainage areas, trim problem limbs, and know how to safely shut off utilities if necessary.

⛽ Plan for power outages — Keep vehicles fueled and portable power banks charged. If using a generator, always operate it outdoors and well away from doors and windows.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Know your family plan — Discuss where you will go, how you will communicate, and what you will do if flooding or extended power outages affect your area.

🌧️ Remember: hurricanes aren't just a coastal threat. Some of North Carolina's most significant inland impacts from tropical systems have come from flooding, falling trees, and extended power outages.

Prepare now, before a storm is headed our way.

Heads up, Burlington. The North Carolina Railroad let us know that starting Monday, August 24 and for the following two weeks, all of the city’s eight at-grade rail crossings (listed below), will at some point be closed 24/7 for multiple days for infrastructure improvements. During some days multiple crossings will be closed at the same time. We do not know exactly when because the work is weather dependent.

Detour signs will be posted, but your best bet will be to aim for the streets with underpasses. Those are Mebane St., Broad St., South Church St., Fisher St., and West Webb Ave.

The North Carolina Railroad and Norfolk Southern is replacing aging rail with continuous welded rail (long sections of steel track welded together to eliminate traditional track joints). The goal is to reduce maintenance costs and improve corridor safety.
