Congrats to the new PCAs! CEDO Continues to Fill Job Gaps

On April 10th, six students from Burlington’s underserved communities had every reason to celebrate! All received the results of their final exams, and all are now qualified and eager to enter the Burlington workforce, to provide professional caregiver services as Personal Care Assistants (PCAs).

Recognizing a dire shortage of workers in the healthcare field, the City of Burlington/Community & Economic Development Office (CEDO) designed this one-of-a kind PCA Plus Training Program that combines classroom instruction, lab skills, personal and professional development (PPD) and diversity and equity training. First launched in July 2023, CEDO has coordinated the training of several cohorts and trained 30 persons from Burlington’s low-income and BIPOC communities, including immigrants and refugees. CEDO, for close to eight (8) years, has been designing and implementing through third party providers, unique workforce development and job training programs, particularly in the construction and healthcare sectors. The PCA Plus Workforce training program is being implemented by Age Well, the leading experts and advocates for the aging population of Northwestern Vermont.

The next PCA Plus training session will begin on May 27, 2025.

Last Monday, seven enthusiastic students arrived early at TLC HomeCare-South Burlington on Williston Road to commence the five-week CEDO-Personal Care Assistant (PCA) Plus Workforce Training Program which combines 60 hours of coursework and lab skills training. Free to all eligible participants, the PCA Plus Workforce Training Program also offers three hours each of personal and professional development (PPD) and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) training. Successful students also receive a $300.00 completion bonus.

Designed by CEDO and first launched in August 2023, the PCA Plus Workforce Training Program has, to date, trained 24 persons – low-income, unemployed, underemployed, women and persons of color, including immigrants and refugees – to become PCAs, supporting their economic mobility and helping to fill scores of open positions in home health and assistant living facilities. As a proof of concept, CEDO also successfully implemented and trained five persons from Burlington’s underserved Arabic-speaking community to become PCAs, utilizing Wordly AI real-time translation and captioning technology.

The PCA Plus Workforce Training Program is implemented by Age Well, the leading experts and advocates for the aging population of Northwestern Vermont.

Another cohort of trainees will begin their PCA Plus training on May 26. Submit your application today to join them!
