⛈️ There is a severe storm threat today (9/5/26). Most of the state is under a Level 2 Threat. Storms may be strong to severe later this afternoon and tonight. Have multiple ways to be informed. Where storms develop, we could see damaging winds, hail, and downpours causing flash flooding.

🔥🌵 And… it’s still hot hot hot out today. Dangerous heat is expected in many areas across the state.

Several communities saw power outages, trees down, and storm water flooding last night. Be aware. Have a plan.

Stay safe today and enjoy your weekend. Hopefully you are cooking something tasty and spending some time with good people.

So the folks at North Carolina Railroad gave us an update today and track work in Mebane took longer than expected. They're going to start on Haw River next week but likely won't make it into Burlington until the week of 9/14. Reminder that when they do, just head for the underpasses listed in original post (thought there may be an issue with the Webb Avenue underpass, but that's a little unclear at the moment....we'll know more next Friday about West Webb Avenue and if it will need to be closed at the Overpass heading to Elon).

Heads up, Burlington. The North Carolina Railroad let us know that starting Monday, August 24 and for the following two weeks, all of the city’s eight at-grade rail crossings (listed below), will at some point be closed 24/7 for multiple days for infrastructure improvements. During some days multiple crossings will be closed at the same time. We do not know exactly when because the work is weather dependent.

Detour signs will be posted, but your best bet will be to aim for the streets with underpasses. Those are Mebane St., Broad St., South Church St., Fisher St., and West Webb Ave.

The North Carolina Railroad and Norfolk Southern is replacing aging rail with continuous welded rail (long sections of steel track welded together to eliminate traditional track joints). The goal is to reduce maintenance costs and improve corridor safety.

You can read more about the project here: https://ncrr.com/cappfi-new-rail/

The at-grade crossings subject to closure are:

Queen Ann St
Gilmer St.
Main St.
Elmira St.
Glen Raven Rd.
Lakeview Drive
Gilliam Rd.
York Rd.
