Rights & Democracy NH

Rights & Democracy NH We believe rights and democracy are won when people come together to make their voices heard.

We believe rights and democracy are won when people come together to make their voices heard, so we’re building a strong movement and the people power necessary to win justice and improve the policies that affect us and our communities. From making sure that every worker earns a livable wage, to securing access to quality healthcare and education for all, we are active in a broad range of issues t

hat people in New Hampshire face every day. It's evident that low-income and working families are not being represented by our elected officials. Rights & Democracy - New Hampshire was formed to build a movement across the region to counter the influence of money in politics and to hold elected officials accountable to upholding our rights and the democracy we live in. Together, we create change through grassroots organizing, educating and mobilizing around the issues that affect our communities, recruiting and training candidates to run for office, and working through the political and electoral process to advance progressive policies that lead to happy, healthy, and just communities for everyone.

**NEW REPORT** 🩺 Strengthening Medicaid: Challenges States Must Address as the Public Health Emergency Ends.

As the unwinding of affects millions nationally, the report reveals that, while Medicaid recipients highly value the program, there are substantial barriers to apply, renewing, and accessing services. Survey responses collected by partners including Rights & Democracy Institute found that:
1️⃣ Almost 1/2 of respondents were unaware of the need to renew coverage when the national public health emergency ended to avoid losing care.
2️⃣ Nearly 1/3 reported challenges applying for Medicaid
3️⃣ More than 1/3 reported challenges accessing services

"There are medications I need that I cannot get, and services I really need in order to better my health and quality of life that are not deemed ‘necessary’ by Medicaid. A yearly eye exam and dental exam are not luxuries that should only be awarded to people with a certain income." - NH survey respondent

Yesterday, Rights & Democracy rallied with Center for Popular Democracy, Alaskans Take A Stand, Our Future West Virginia, Texas Organizing Project, Detroit Action, Center for Coalfield Justice, SPACEs In Action, and Arkansas Community Organizations at the US Capitol with CPD affiliates from across the country. We demand immediate Congressional action to provide emergency healthcare coverage that guarantees that everyone eligible can keep their access, regardless of the new policies Republican lawmakers designed to kick people off their plan and gut Medicaid! Act now to protect the healthcare coverage of millions of Americans and share this information with your friends and loved ones: https://popdemoc.org/3L4GM8Z

Jodi Newell, RAD's NH Overdose Crisis Organizer and Representative for NH House, Cheshire District 1, urged councilors to keep social workers separate from the police department.

"People who have substance use issues deal with the police on a regular basis in a very negative way,” she said. "So if we want to use this money to save other people’s lives, I would beg you to separate it from the people who are tasked with enforcing the criminalization of substance use."

Keene officials are considering hiring a social worker for the police department to integrate mental health support into the local policing model.

New Hampshire is the only state in New England where recreational ma*****na use remains illegal. Efforts to change that looked even stronger this year, thanks to support from the top Democrat and Republican in the New Hampshire House.

Ma*****na policy update: The New Hampshire House of Representatives voted 272 to 109 to pass a bill to legalize and tax cannabis.

The health and well-being of New Hampshire communities should not be sacrificed to serve xenophobic and racist narratives and policies at the national and international levels.

The Biden and Trudeau administrations are taking the wrong approach to the northern border. New Hampshire people must protect the progress we have made to welcome immigrants and build healthy local communities.
