Today, members of the South Burlington Fire - IAFF Local 3671 technical rescue team came over to station two and drilled with B-Shift members on the use of an aerial for rope rescue. Trainings like this not only improve individual skills, but improve interoperability with mutual aid departments.

Burlington firefighters recently completed advanced rope rooftop rescue training, learning techniques designed to reduce rescue time and manpower needs.

The Burlington Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 3044 would like to thank the Mayor and
Burlington’s City Councilors for the meaningful work done in getting this year’s budget
passed. In a time of fiscal stress, we acknowledge the hard work put in by all parties involved to see that no cuts to the fire department were incurred and that the department’s budget saw a modest increase to support our ever-expanding mission within the Queen City. In recent years, the City, the Department administration, and the members of the BFFA have made meaningful strides in ensuring that we’re ready to answer the call when it comes in, and this budget helps
to keep that forward momentum.

We would also like to extend our thanks to the Burlington community as it is important to note
that such a budget would not be possible without the support from the community.

We look forward to the work ahead and are confident that the relationship between the City
and its firefighters is one that will only serve to improve public safety within the City of
Burlington.

The BFFA would like to thank Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak for taking the time to join A-shift at their live burn training today down at the Vermont Fire Academy (a 1.5 hour drive away). Getting a better understanding of the work our members do and the challenges we face is crucial when focusing on a budget that takes into account staffing, equipment, apparatus, and training needs. We truly appreciate it when our city leaders are invested in understanding what city employees need and Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak is leading from the front.

Yesterday, a group of L3044 members traveled to Boston to pay our respects and attend the funeral for Boston Firefighter Bobby “BK” Kilduff, who lost his life in the line of duty. While down there we met up with many other firefighters from Vermont locals. Standing shoulder to shoulder with firefighters from all over the country as well as from departments from just next door was a great reminder that whether you are from a large local like Boston or NY, or from the one of the smallest states in the union, we are all family and we show up.

Mark your calendars, May 4th in the City of Burlington is now Firefighter Appreciation Day! A big thank you to Councilor Litwin for bringing this resolution forward and to every member of the council who voted unanimously to pass it. While our members don’t do this work for the spot light, it’s nice to hear the kind words from the councilors recognizing the sacrifices our members make and the risks they are willing to take to serve the City of Burlington.
