Last week officials gathered in Hinesburg to mark the beginning of construction on 36 new permanently affordable apartments to be called Riggs Meadow. The land for these homes was donated by local leader Jan Blomstrann (pictured) and built in partnership with Evernorth. Construction crews will start work as soon as November 1st in a multi-phased development that will ultimately include homes for sale, a childcare center and walking trails. US Senator Peter Welch, Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak, Vermont Treasurer Mike Pieciak and dozens of others helped CHT celebrate the beginning of construction of Shale Beach Condominiums, a 30-home new development located in the Cambrian Rise neighborhood on North Avenue in Burlington. Ten years ago, we spoke with Bree when she and her 6-year-old son were living in a brand new two-bedroom apartment at Bright Street Co-op. At the time, she considered her co-op apartment to be a “stepping stone, a middle ground between renting and owning.” After her daughter was born, they moved into a three-bedroom with a welcoming front porch, lots of natural light and back door access to Bright Street Co-op’s outdoor community space. As this co-op celebrates its 10th anniversary, Bree and her family are settled and happy for the convenience and freedom living here allows them. And Bree says, “It’s an interesting mix, because in a co-op there are so many different personalities – it’s kind of like an extended family.” Through a decade of change and uncertainty, their home remains a sanctuary.
