New Speed Limit Signs Coming to Highway 29

The City of Burnet will soon coordinate with TxDOT to install new speed limit signs on a short section of State Highway 29 within the city limits.

The City Council recently approved reducing the speed limit from 55 mph to 50 mph on a 0.221-mile section of Highway 29 near the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office area. The change is based on a TxDOT engineering and traffic study that found the reduced speed limit would help improve traffic safety.

The new 50 mph speed limit will apply to both eastbound and westbound traffic between Coke Street and a point approximately 180 feet west of County Road 250. Drivers are encouraged to watch for the new signage and follow the posted speed limit once the signs are installed.

No Parking Signs Coming to Creekfall Phase 3

The City of Burnet will soon begin installing no-parking signs on certain streets within the Creekfall Phase 3 Subdivision following recent City Council approval of permanent parking restrictions in the area.

The restrictions apply only to designated sides of certain streets and are intended to improve traffic flow, visibility, pedestrian safety, and access for emergency vehicles. Once the signs are installed, parking will not be allowed in the marked areas.

Affected streets include portions of Big Sugar Road, Gristmill Road, Wheel Horse Road, Prairie Dew Road, Desert Drive, Bridle Road, and Hayburner Road. Residents and visitors are encouraged to watch for the new signage and follow the posted parking restrictions once installation is complete.

NRCS EWP Buyout Program Continues Progress into Eligibility Review Phase

This week’s update reflects a shorter reporting period, with only three business days between last Friday’s update and the transition to the new Wednesday weekly update schedule.

Even within that short timeframe, The Goodman Corporation has continued moving the NRCS EWP (Emergency Watershed Protection) Buyout Program forward. The most notable progress is the completion of one additional Phase I Environmental Site Assessment and survey. The total number of completed Phase I/ESA and surveys has increased from 11 to 12, and all 12 have now been sent to the appraisal consultant and referred for appraisal.

TGC has also begun moving into the next level of homeowner documentation and eligibility review. Pending Items Notices were sent to property owners to request required forms and Duplication of Benefits supporting documentation. TGC also provided the City with pre-disaster and Duplication of Benefits guidance for review and discussion.

In addition, the City provided TGC with a deed restriction template. TGC is reviewing the template and will make recommendations on suggested language. Additional program forms have also been added to the documentation package, including the Declaration of U.S. Citizenship Form, Pending Items Notice, and Property Occupancy Record. The acquisition phase remains pending appraisal initiation with homeowners.

Fire Department Partners with Ascension Seton for Advanced Medical Training

The Fire Department recently participated in specialized training provided by Ascension Seton focused on the care and management of patients with Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs).

LVADs are advanced mechanical devices used to help patients with severe heart failure by assisting the heart in pumping blood throughout the body. As these devices become more common, it is increasingly important for emergency responders to understand their operation and the unique considerations involved in treating these patients.

The training provided hands-on education regarding LVAD components, patient assessment, troubleshooting techniques, and emergency management procedures. We are grateful to Ascension Seton for providing this valuable training opportunity.

The Fire Department remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of emergency medical service for the citizens and visitors of Burnet and Burnet County.

TWDB’s Water Weekly: The latest drought map for conditions as of June 2 shows drought contraction of seven or more percentage points for the second consecutive week. This week’s drought contraction was driven by improvements in South and West Texas and has reduced the total drought area in the state to its smallest extent in 2026. https://bit.ly/TexasWaterWeekly

As you may be aware, the City of Burnet, Burnet County, and the City of Marble Falls have completed the formal formation process necessary to establish the Highland Lakes Sub-Regional Planning Commission under Chapter 391 of the Texas Local Government Code. The Commission was created to help the participating local governments work together on regional issues that may affect land use, infrastructure, public safety, economic development, and the long-term character of our communities.

More importantly, the Commission provides a way for our local governments to speak with a unified voice as outside entities consider major infrastructure projects in Burnet County. These may include transmission lines, battery storage facilities, and other projects that could affect residents, private property, natural resources, and quality of life. While some projects may be necessary to support growth and regional infrastructure needs, local concerns should be heard, and potential impacts should be fully considered before decisions are made.

One of the first matters addressed by the Commission is the proposed Bell County East – Big Hill 765 kV transmission line project. To help guide that discussion, the Commission has developed a transmission line siting policy that identifies local priorities and concerns. The policy is available on the Commission’s website at: https://www.highlandlakes391.com/resources.

At a high level, the policy encourages transmission line routes to be evaluated in a way that protects public health and safety, limits impacts to homes and neighborhoods, preserves private property and agricultural operations where possible, avoids unnecessary impacts to parks, historic areas, natural resources, and scenic corridors, and supports responsible long-term growth. The policy also encourages the use of existing transmission line paths, easements, roads, highways, railroads, and other compatible rights-of-way to the greatest extent practicable in order to minimize impacts to affected communities and landowners. The policy does not select a specific route, but it does establish principles the Commission believes should be considered before any final route is determined.

As part of this effort, the Commission has sent initial letters to Oncor Electric, the Public Utility Commission of Texas, the Texas Historical Commission, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, whose input may be important to the review of this proposed project.

The next step will be to hold coordination meetings with these entities. During those meetings, the Commission will request documentation and written responses showing how local concerns are being considered as the route is evaluated and finalized. These coordination meetings will be open to the public, and residents will have the opportunity to attend and stay informed as the process moves forward.

The goal is simple: to make sure our communities are heard, our concerns are taken seriously, and decisions regarding the placement of the proposed transmission line are made with a full understanding of the potential local impacts.

Message from the Chief- Employee Spotlight

As part of our “Get to Know Your Burnet Police Department Team” series, I’m excited to recognize Marci Russell our June Employee Spotlight.

This month we are highlighting one of the familiar faces behind the scenes who helps keep our department running smoothly every single day.

Originally from Nevada, she moved to Texas 13 years ago without even knowing where Burnet was located. Law enforcement was never part of her original career plan, but nearly eight years later, she has become an important part of the Burnet Police Department family.

Growing up, she dreamed of becoming a teacher. While attending college, she worked at one of the largest trauma hospitals in Reno and quickly discovered her passion was in the medical field. She earned a degree in Health and Science and spent 14 years working in both adult and pediatric medicine, serving others during some of the most difficult moments in their lives.

After relocating to Texas, with a young son starting kindergarten and family far away, she made the decision to step away from hospital work and joined BCISD as a registrar. That role not only allowed her to spend more time with her son but also helped her build friendships and connections within the Burnet community.

When the opportunity came to join the Burnet Police Department, she embraced the challenge, even though it was completely outside her comfort zone. She started as the department’s Administrative Assistant and today serves as the Civilian Staff Supervisor and the Departments Evidence Technician.

Her role requires organization, professionalism, compassion, and trust. Much like her background in medicine, she often works with people and families during some of the hardest times of their lives. Her ability to support others with care and empathy has made a lasting impact on both the department and the community we serve.

She also shared something that speaks volumes about our organization. She said one of the greatest blessings of her career has been finding a true work family within the Burnet Police Department. Anyone who knows our team understands exactly what she means.

Outside of work, much of her life has revolved around supporting her son through sports, Friday Night Lights, and feeding hungry varsity football players over the years. Now, with her son graduating and heading off to Texas Tech, she and her family are beginning a new chapter as empty nesters and looking forward to new adventures ahead.

Thank you for your dedication, your heart for service, and the care you show our department every day. We are proud to have you as part of the Burnet Police Department family.

TWDB’s Water Weekly: After no change in total drought area last week, the latest map for conditions as of May 26 shows a return to the pattern of weekly drought contraction. Since last week, widespread areas of East and South Texas experienced one category of improvement. In the Panhandle, there was a mix of improvement and degradation. https://bit.ly/TexasWaterWeekly
