Grateful that my California Indian Freedom Act of 2026, AB 1881, was approved last week and now will be heard in the state Senate. It will allow Native Americans access to state lands for the practice of their religion, including gathering of Native plants, holding ceremonies, and other religious traditions. The California-Nevada Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (Cal/Nev JATC) will soon begin accepting applications for its Outside Line Apprentice Program.

πŸ“… Applications open June 22, 2026 through July 3, 2026

The Outside Line Apprentice Program helps train future journeyman linemen who build, maintain, and repair the power grid that keeps homes, businesses, hospitals, and communities running throughout California and Nevada.

Here are a few things many people may not know about the program:

⚑ Apprentices are paid while they train
⚑ The program combines classroom instruction with thousands of hours of on-the-job training
⚑ Graduates can go on to become Journeyman Linemen with strong union wages and benefits
⚑ Work can include climbing poles, working from bucket trucks, installing power lines, storm restoration, and maintaining electrical infrastructure
⚑ The apprenticeship is known for being physically demanding, competitive, and highly respected in the trade industry

Typical requirements often include:
β€’ Must be at least 18 years old
β€’ High school diploma or GED
β€’ Valid unrestricted Class A CDL is commonly required
β€’ Ability to perform physically demanding outdoor work in all weather conditions

The California-Nevada JATC is one of the most recognized line apprenticeship programs in the western United States.
