12/21/22 – 10:41 AM: The National Weather Service has issued a BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM THURSDAY TO 6 AM CST SATURDAY

WHAT: Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 8 inches. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph expected. Wind chill values of 25 to 35 below zero expected.

WHERE: Porter County

WHEN: From 3 PM Thursday to 6 AM CST Saturday.

IMPACTS: Falling and blowing snow will result in white out conditions with zero visibility at times, making travel extremely difficult, if not impossible. Power outages will also be possible as a result of strong wind gusts to 55 mph. Roads may become ice covered as temperatures rapidly fall late Thursday afternoon into early Thursday evening.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 25 to 35 below zero are likely Thursday night through Friday night. Wind chills of this magnitude can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 20 minutes.

TIPS: Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle.

12/21/2022

Just a friendly reminder, it is a violation of Town Ordinance, to plow, blow, or shovel snow into the roadways. This creates dangerous conditions and could cause and accident. You could receive a ticket, if you do this. Also, if possible, please remove any basketball hoops, as well as your garbage toter, from the alleys and roadways, please. This department is not responsible for damage to basketball hoops. The cab protectors on are trucks are the perfect height to snag them, when we pass. Thank you for your cooperation.

With the forecasted winter storm approaching, Commissioner Wesley has enacted a snow emergency parking ban, beginning at 3:00 pm on Thursday, December 22 and continuing until snow removal operations have ended, sometime on Saturday, December 24th. During the snow emergency, parking on any street is strictly prohibited. Please keep in mind, if we can not keep up with the snowfall, crews will concentrate on the main arteries and then work our way onto the side streets and subdivisions.
Throughout the evening Thursday, blizzard like conditions are expected, with high sustained winds and bitter temperatures. 30 to 35 mph sustained winds are expected for 24 to 28 hours, with 50 to 65 mph wind gusts. Creating dangerous travel conditions with blowing and drifting snow and low to zero visibility.
The storm is supposed to begin Thursday evening, Snow is forecasted to continue overnight Thursday and Friday, before moving to the east on Saturday morning.
We completely understand your frustration and the inconvenience this causes, however as the snow falls, and removal continues, we will not be able to throw the snow over a certain height and the roadways will begin to narrow as time goes on. With this being said, heavy equipment will be used to widen the roadways and move snow as needed.
We thank you for your cooperation in advance and wish us luck.

Experience has shown us, the Manhattan Weather Channel has proved to be the most accurate source for weather around, and they are who we follow, with any impending storm.

Confidence is building that we will have a full blown Blizzard Thursday night into Friday. Please share, be weather aware!

Good morning everyone:) Here is a blend of several different models averaged together from the National Weather Service. This will give you an idea of what is to come Thursday night and Friday as to where the heaviest snow will fall. Models will continue to change and fine tune as we get closer to the event, however it is getting clear that we will see a disruptive snow event here, with winds up to 50mph causing Blizzard conditions and extremely cold wind chills down to -30. This storm will have a big impact on travel starting Thursday late afternoon through Saturday morning with hazardous blowing and drifting of snow and possible power outages. I will have more updates as new information is available.

All 3 models are pretty much saying the same thing. This is a major winter storm, that's going to severely impact Christmas travel plans.

I know this is way too far in advance, and 99% of the ppl here in NW Indiana know, that winter weather changes constantly! Alot more than summer weather. But just a heads up. Major snow storm if not blizzard for Friday. I'm not too confident on this because how far off in advance it is. I'll keep an eye out though and keep everyone posted.

Better get the bread and milk......no, seriously!

A strong winter storm will impact the western Great Lakes region Thursday into Saturday with snow and strong winds. The worst conditions are expected Thursday evening into Friday evening, with blizzard conditions possible during this time. While specific details in the storm track and resultant snowfall amounts still need to be refined over the coming days, confidence in severe winter weather impacts to northern Illinois and northwest Indiana continues to increase. If possible, those traveling Thursday through Friday should begin to consider alternate travel plans. Regardless of the intensity of the storm, bitterly cold arctic air and strong winds will result in dangerously low wind chills Friday into Christmas.

12/19/2022

We are closely watching a major winter storm system, that has the potential to have a major impact on the region, Thursday evening through Saturday. We will do our best to keep you up-to-date, as this system approaches.

Did you know, it is against Indiana State law to park within 30' of any intersection? Our crews are slowly working our way through our subdivisions and painting the curbs and installing signage, to help residents remember. We realize how limited parking can be in certain areas, however, this is a matter of public safety. If emergency equipment can't get to the address they're dispatched to, this could cost lives. Especially when vehicles are parking across from each other on both sides of the roadway. It does not matter if there is a stop sign at an intersection, or not.

Congratulations Chief! We wish you the best, but you still better swing by for coffee once in a while.

Congratulations Chief! We wish you the best, but you still better swing by for coffee once in a while.

Town Marshal Michael Heckman has officially retired after more than 15 years of service to the Town of Burns Harbor, with 10 of those years serving as our Town Marshal. He announced his intention to retire at the August Town Council meeting. He will fondly be remembered in the community as a hardworking, committed, friendly person who would always stop to say hello to all the kids in town.

Heckman graciously thanked the Town Council for the opportunity to serve the community. β€œIt is now time to transfer the torch and with that being said, I placed a young officer in a position six years ago as Assistant Marshal. He has been by my side every day since then. He has proven to me that he has the ability to run the department and bring in new ideas while keeping the Town running in a professional manner that will make me and the Town of Burns Harbor proud,” said Heckman. β€œMy request is to name Jeremy McHargue the next Town Marshal for Burns Harbor.”

By unanimous vote, the Town Council appointed Jeremy McHargue to take the reins on September 1st as the next Town Marshal.

Congratulations to both Michael Heckman and Jeremy McHargue as they begin the next chapter in their lives.
