This weekend

This weekend, experience Oregon’s living traditions at the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center!

BLM’s Oregon Culture Keeper Residency continues May 7-9 with cowboy poet, buckaroo, horse trainer, and rancher Kathy “A.K.” Moss of Prairie City.

Known for her authentic storytelling and original cowboy poetry, A.K. Moss brings the spirit of the American West to life through stories shaped by ranch work, horses, and rural traditions. Visitors can meet her throughout the Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with featured presentations at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. in the Leo Adler Theatre, Wagon Box Theatre, and other locations onsite.

As part of America’s 250th anniversary, the Oregon Culture Keeper Residency highlights the traditions, stories, and lifeways that continue to shape our nation and public lands.

Time to step up for the birds.

Due to a lack of appropriations funding the United States of America's federal government is experiencing a shutdown of departments and agencies. Malheur National Wildlife Refuge staff are on furlough and will be unpaid and unable to perform their responsibilities to the refuge until appropriations funding is approved by Congress and the Government returns to normal operation.

During this time, Malheur Refuge public access areas will be open to the public. The Friends of Malheur ask, plead to the visiting public, that you respect our precious refuge and the wildlife that depend on it for their very survival. Please be kind to the public facilities, including bathrooms, as they will remain open. Please abide by closed area signs for the benefit of wildlife and your own safety as emergency response resources will be thin at best.

During this time, please also consider contacting your federal elected officials from across the country - wherever you are - to raise the issue of necessary funding for public lands. For biological inventory and monitoring. For habitat management and restoration. For public use services. For wildland fire response. For future generations of wildlife and Americans who cherish and benefit from the protections of and access to public lands.
